Chapter Twenty-Seven: A Tense Interrogation (Part 2)

POV: Zero

The room fell into a thick silence, I glanced at Gadget from the viewing area, a mix of worry and fear shot through my eyes.

Gadget nodded softly and flashed a warm, gentle smile.

I turned back only to be face to face with Shadow. I shot a glare at him.

"That's right, you murdered my squad." I bared my fangs. "You were the source of all my pain."

"Shadow?!" Sonic stood up in shock. "You have some explaining to do" he narrowed his eyes and sat back down.

Shadow growled, "I have nothing to explain." he sat back and crossed his arms. "They got in my way."

"We were part of Eggman's defense team, we were only doing our duty to protect his base, you got in our way." I explained gruffly and turned to Sonic, "My squad and I were trying to keep Shadow away from Eggman's base, I was waiting in the trees for Shadow but when I tried to contact my squad...nobody picked up, all I heard was strangled screams."

Sonic rubbed his forehead, "Alright, I feel sympathy for you, Zero" he sat up straight, elbowing Shadow to also sit up. "But we need to focus, this is an interrogation, I'll take that information in but we need to ask more questions" he explained, writing stuff down. "So, do you accept that you murdered hundreds of mobians?"

I frowned, "Regrettably, yes"

Sonic nodded, "Do you account for the damage you and Eggman caused in the cities?"

"Yes" I nodded.

"Do you accept reformation?" Sonic tilted his head. "I see Gadget done a pretty good job at helping you, and if you do accept help, you'll be a vital member of the Resistance"

"Of course, I want to better myself, I am no longer Infinite" I explained. "I want to move forward with Gadget and most of all, I want to be accepted back into society..."

Sonic hummed, "Good, good"

Shadow grunted, "So you also agree to exposure?"

This question sent a sharp elbow into Shadow's side again. Shadow hissed and growled at Sonic who hit him, Sonic sent a glare back at Shadow.

I looked at my claws, "I...I'm unsure about that, I don't want to cause another ruckus" I sighed, "I want others to see the reformed me, and not the me that caused so much death and destruction"

Sonic nodded, "I see"

Shadow narrowed his eyes but didn't persist further, he sat back and sighed. "You're still on my death list, don't forget that." he threatened.

"Shadow, enough" Sonic frowned, writing down information. "Leave him be"

I growled at the dark hedgehog, "Trust me, I will never forget that."

"Guys, enough." Sonic groaned, finishing writing. "End interrogation." he stood up. Shadow also stood up and walked out of the room, leaving me and Sonic there. Sonic placed his gloved hand on my shoulder, "It'll be alright, Zero, I won't let Shadow anywhere near you" he flashed a smile.

"Thanks..." I mumbled. "Listen, I'm sorry about what I done to you on the Death Egg, I feel horrible about it"

"Hey, everything's cool" Sonic grinned. "You're a good person, you've got me and Gadget to support you"

I smiled very slightly, "So, what now?..."

"Well, I'll talk to the others in a meeting and we'll discuss what to do" Sonic explained. "I want you and Gadget to stay in the base until we make a decision, we have a spare room for you two" he walked to the door, I followed him. "The meeting should only take a day or two, but for now you should get some rest, your room is the first door on the left"

"I understand" I walked through the door. "Thanks, I appreciate it, truly"

Sonic gave a thumbs up, "No problem, I'll see you around!" he walked with his group to a room down the right hallway. I seen Gadget and hugged him tightly, Gadget returned the hug.

"I'm so proud of you, Zero" Gadget beamed. "You did amazing"

"Thanks...now we just wait" I sighed and broke the hug, linking my hand in his. "Sonic said our room should be this way" I walked down the left hallway and entered the first room.

The room was small but comfortable, albeit there was one single bed against the wall, but we could fit on it. The room had a private bathroom, wardrobe, window and bedside table.

"I remember these rooms" Gadget commented, sitting on the bed. "I used to stay here during the war"

I sat beside him, "Wow...it's comfortable for such a small room"

"Yeah, the Resistance base has twelve rooms, a kitchen, and a medical room for treating injured mobians" Gadget explained. "I forgot how big this base was" he chuckled and rubbed the back of his head.

"It is massive" I chuckled and stood up to nosey around, I looked out the window, there was a magnificent view of the city. I sensed Gadget close to me, he stood next to me and wrapped his arm around my side, resting his head on my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around him and held him close, watching the bright sunny day.

Y'know...maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
