Chapter Twenty-Six: A Tense Interrogation (Part 1)

POV: Gadget

Zero managed to get back to sleep after a while, much to my relief. It was almost dawn, so I stayed awake, thinking about what really happened in the past hour.

That was some nightmare.

I felt sick thinking of how this interrogation is going to go down.

Especially if Shadow is the one interrogating him.

I can only imagine the carnage that would happen.

Not to mention Zero's life that would hang in the balance.

I stroked Zero's ears as he slept, earning soft purrs in response. I smiled but frowned after,

This world is too cruel to you, Zero.

My phone buzzed on the bedside table, I grunted and reached for it before it woke up Zero. Grabbing my phone, I looked at who messaged me.

Sonic: Hey, Gadget! We have scheduled the interrogation for this afternoon sharp, unfortunately, giving Zero's past with Shadow, Shadow will be the one interrogating him as he has more experience with Zero than anyone else. I will be there beside Shadow if things get out of hand, but I ask you to stay with the others outside the room, you can watch through the glass box but you can't interfere.

My heart skipped a beat reading the text,

Oh no.

I felt shuffling and looked at Zero, who yawned before looking up at me, his eyes were less bloodshot than before which was a relief.

"Morning..." Zero grunted tiredly.

"Good morning" I kissed his forehead. "Uhm, I got a text from Sonic there now, he has scheduled the interrogation for this afternoon"

"Oh..." Zero frowned and sighed. "Let me guess, Shadow is leading the interrogation?"

"Unfortunately, yes" I sighed too, putting my phone down and rubbing his large ears. "But I'll be there watching from the viewing box, Sonic is going to be with Shadow to make sure the interrogation runs as smoothly as possible"

Zero nuzzled into my neck, "I don't want to go..."

"I know, but we have no choice" I frowned.

That nightmare really messed him up...

I feel horrible for having to bring him to the one person he does not want to see...

"You're going to be okay, Zero" I stroked his back gently, "And remember, you don't have to answer every question he throws at you, you have the right to remain silent"

Zero hummed sadly, "What time is it now?" he mumbled.

I grabbed my phone and looked at the clock on it; 11:06.

"Eleven, we need to move" I put my phone down, Zero groaned in protest but released me from his grasp and got up. I looked at some comfortable clothes to wear in my wardrobe.

No.

No.

Hmmm..

I picked out a simple grey hoodie, it was soft on the inside.

Yes.

I glanced over at Zero, who was slipping on the purple hoodie I gave him. I rushed to put my glasses on, then my boots, I didn't put my gloves on simply because I didn't want to.

I looked at my phone again; 11:16.

"We can eat breakfast on the way" I headed to the kitchen to grab two breakfast bars and gave Zero one. I grabbed my keys and phone. Zero nibbled on the bar as we left the building.

The walk to the Resistance base was a silent one, I didn't mind too much as I assume Zero was thinking over what might happen, and honestly, I was too.

When we got there, Zero clutched my hand, I stroked his softly as we walked inside, just in time for the interrogation to begin.

Everyone was there.

Now, that wasn't a problem to me.

But this is the first time everyone is seeing Zero, and I could see the uncomfortableness in Zero's eyes.

I don't blame you, Zero.

Sonic came in to see us, thankfully breaking contact of all the eyes off Zero.

"Hey, Gadget!" Sonic flashed his signature grin.

"Hey, Sonic" I fist bumped him and smiled back. Zero rubbed his arm, still uncomfortable at the attention he got by the others.

"Uhm, everyone!" Sonic caught their attention, I could see Zero breathe a sigh of relief.

"The interrogation is about to begin, so can you all head to the viewing area" Sonic announced.

I turned to Zero, "Looks like that's me"

Zero frowned, "I don't want you to go..."

When everyone was away I cupped his cheek, "I'll only be in the viewing area, you can still see me there and I'll be with you, maybe not beside you but in here" I touched his heart. "Don't worry, everything will be okay" I quickly kissed him. "I'll see you around"

I let go of his hand and followed the others to the viewing area.

I let out a shaky sigh.

Chaos, I hope he'll be okay there...

POV: Zero

I gulped and followed Sonic to the interrogation room, feeling sick to my stomach. I don't know whether it was the anxiety of seeing Shadow or the fact that I can't be with Gadget during the interrogation.

I entered the room, pulling down my hood - reluctantly. I sat down on the single seat facing Shadow and Sonic.

Fuck.

Calm down...

Calm down...

You can do this.

"Time is twelve o'clock" Shadow stated, writing on a piece of paper. "Let's begin" he looked at me.

I fiddled with my claws anxiously, waiting for the first question.

"Tell me your name, your real name." Shadow stated, never breaking eye contact with me.

I gulped, "Zero"

Shadow wrote stuff down. "Tell me why you decided to join Eggman, what urged you to join him?"

You murdered my squad.

I wanted revenge.

"Revenge." I narrowed my eyes at the hedgehog. "For my fallen crew"

Sonic's ears perked at hearing this.

I could see Shadow tense up slightly too.

"You had a team?" Sonic asked, taking over the questions temporarily.

"I had a squad, yes." I grunted. "We worked for Eggman before I obtained the ruby, on our first defense task, my squad was killed." I explained.

"By what?" Sonic tilted his head.

I felt Shadows cold glare on me, I snuck at glare back at him. Thankfully, Sonic was oblivious to the glares.

I sat back, "Let's just say..."

"A certain hedgehog murdered them."
