Chapter Twenty-Eight: Fused

POV: Zero

An alarm blared through the base during my sleep, I shot up and looked around in panic. Gadget was also up immediately, he got out of the small bed.

"What's going on?" I asked worriedly.

"I don't know, but it's okay" Gadget smiled reassuringly. "I won't let anything happen to you"

I nodded softly and smiled back gently. We poked our heads out of the room and looked around. I stepped out and looked up at the blaring red alarms,

Chaos, I'm gonna get a headache from them.

Gadget grabbed my hand and went to the meeting room to see if anyone was there, and to my own discomfort, the whole gang was there discussing something. I rubbed my arm as Gadget went to talk to Sonic to ask what was going on.

I overheard some of their conversation:

"The ruby is going wild"

"Can we stop it?"

"I don't know, Gadget..."

The ruby?...

I looked around and seen the ruby held on a pedestal.

Oh...

It was pulsating like crazy, its glow was also very bright, as in its reacting to something.

Could it...be reacting to my presence?

As I approached the ruby, it hesitated a bit before the glowing and pulsating ceased. Unintentionally, I had all eyes on me now, even Gadget's.

I hovered my hand over the gem and glanced at everyone, before giving my explanation, "Its reacting to my presence, since I previously had a ruby it can sense the ruby's magic from inside my blood" I gently picked up the ruby. "It seems to have calmed, for now, I think..."

Gadget walked over to me, "Be careful, Zero" he warned in worry.

I placed the ruby down on the pedestal. "It's okay, I think it went wild because of an absent host" I explained further. "I have plenty of experience with the phantom ruby to know this myself, if the host isn't present for a while, the ruby becomes hostile"

"Sonic, you said it calmed in your touch, you could be the host" Tails hummed. "Aside from Zero, of course"

"But, if it calmed in both of our touches, then who's the real host?" Sonic asked.

"Try to touch it, Sonic" Gadget tilted his head. I stood back in case the ruby shot us back in defense, standing with Gadget.

Sonic gulped, "Okay..." he approached the ruby. I watched carefully, the ruby began to pulsate again - faster and faster as Sonic approached it.

It's gonna attack.

"Sonic, don't!" I exclaimed, stopping Sonic just in time.

"What is-" Sonic was cut off as he was blasted backwards from a red pulse. "Ow..." he rubbed his head.

I sighed, "It doesn't want you to be it's host anymore"

"Why?" Tails and Sonic asked at the same time.

"It was only using you so I would come here, since I had to be here for the interrogation we fell right into its trap, it caused the alarms to go off because it was calling me, therefore when you tried to approach it you got pushed away" I explained with a heavy sigh. "It also sensed the remaining magic in my blood, so it chose me to be it's host from my previous experience with a ruby"

"What happens now?" Gadget asked wearily.

"I don't know...but I do know that it will keep setting the alarms off when I'm not here with it" I frowned. "If you really want all the chaos to stop then the ruby has to fuse with the host..." I muttered.

"No." Shadow growled. "Not happening."

"Shadow" Sonic glared.

"I'm not risking another war just to get the alarms to stop." Shadow narrowed his eyes. "We can barely trust him at the minute, what if he uses the ruby for power again? What are we going to do?"

"He won't" Gadget spoke up, "I trust him"

"You may trust him, but we still have yet to trust him" Knuckles growled.

"If I do fuse with the ruby, I swear to only use it if really necessary, and only for good" I looked at the others. "I am no longer the power crazed jackal I once was"

"How do you fuse with it?" Gadget asked.

"Well, it takes a few minutes, but the ruby hovers over my chest before slowly beginning the process of merging with my skin" I glanced at the ruby. "It hurts, as expected, but the pain soon goes away"

"As long as you keep to your word" Sonic raised a brow. "Then I have no problem with you having it, it could really benefit helping cities"

A few hums were heard through the room.

"Are you sure you want this...thing in your skin?" Gadget asked concerningly. "I don't want it hurting you, your skin is just recovering there" he pressed on the scar on my chest lightly. "What if it goes wrong? What if you get seriously hurt?! What if-"

"Gadget, I'll be okay, trust me" I linked my hand in his, completely forgetting the eyes we got from around the room. "Just...stand back a bit, I don't want you getting hurt" I flashed a smile and walked to the ruby.

I shakily breathed out, clutching the ruby in my hand and holding it to my chest. I waited for the ruby to do it's magic; it glowed and pulsated, before rising up in my hand and floating for a few seconds. It was quiet, so quiet you could hear a pin drop in the room.

All I seen was the ruby slamming into my chest before it all went black.
