as i sat in the back of the car, watching the trees pass, i kept think about kairi. i thought we'd never have anything to do with each other after what he said.
but the following week, he volunteered for the empty library assistant position, for some reason. i carried a pile of books to the library check in desk, as kairi followed me. we placed them down at the same time and he let out a sigh of exhaustion.
'man, that was heavy! do we have to do this everyday?' he panted, i nodded which made him let out a whine. 'this is an important part of the job... why'd you sign up for this?' i asked, genuinely confused.
'who knows' he replied looking at his phone. 'do you even like books?' i questioned, trying not to come off as rude. 'nope' he replied, popping the 'p' in nope, still looking at his phone.
'oh, i do read a lot of comics!' he chimed as i grabbed the book scanner. i picked up the first book in the pile and flipped it over, 'do you really wanna spend the rest of your life doing a library job?' i replied bluntly, finding the barcode on the book and scanned it quickly.
'obviously, why wouldn't i?' he giggled, as he sat down in the library chair, spinning it quickly. 'i'm not sure what's so 'obvious' about that...'
'what else should i be doing then?' kairi says, stopping the chair and furrowing his eyebrows. he grabbed his backpack from the ground and tossed it onto the library counter.
'maybe going to date your crush, or hitchhiking in a foreign country and finding a nice place to die, or something' i retaliated before glancing at kairi. his mouth was agape and he looked at me with an unreadable expression.
he looked at the ground, 'i know where you're coming from... but don't you have things you wanna do before you die too?' kairi said in a tone almost above a whisper.
'yeah-,' i started before he cut me off. 'yet you're not doing them right now... you don't know if you're gonna drop dead tomorrow!' kairi snapped causing me to look down in embarrassment. 'you can die at any time just like me, every day is worth the same as the other' the boy said, lowering his tone back to normal.
he lifted his head up and looked at me. 'what i did or didn't do today doesn't change its worth... so i have fun doing normal stuff like this' he smiled. i just hummed not knowing what to do in interactions like this.
kairi glanced back at the desk and grabbed his diary, 'i'm making a list of things i wanna do in here... and i'll let you come along!' he declared pointing at his book, jumping from his seat to stand next to me. i continued to scan the remaining books. 'what do you mean?'
'you said that i should live my last moments however i want and i choose you to enjoy them with me' kairi smirked as i looked up at him.
'that's not what i me-,' i started before kairi huffed. 'well, i wanna drag you along!' he pleaded with a loud tone, standing on his tip toes to meet up with my face. his face soon turned red and he stood back down.
he looked at me with huge puppy dog eyes that looked mesmerizing. 'please mattia' he said as he clasped his hands together in a begging manner. i sighed as i scanned the last book quickly. 'fine...' i replied which made him squeal.
he grabbed his backpack and book, then waited for me to finish packing up my things. i shut off the library lights, walked toward the exit where kairi was sitting and locked the door.
kairi was sitting on the doorsteps, with excitement radiating off of him. i walked down the steps which made kairi stand up quickly, he dusted his shorts off, then skipped next to me.
i followed him because i had no clue where we were going then we ended up at a mcdonald's? i looked at him in confusion as he squealed walking pushing the door. i walked in behind him, he had a huge smile on his face, 'do you like mcdonald's?' he questioned starring at the huge menu.
i nodded my head which made him smile again. he bit his lip looking at the menu, concentrating at the illuminating choices. 'hmm do you know what you're gonna get?' he said breaking the silence between us.
'no..-,' then me and him were next in line. we walked to the cashier, it was a short boy like kairi, he had tan skin, dark brown hair that matched his dark eyes. 'hey kairi... and hi' the boys said with a slight nervous tone as his eyes gazed over at me.
i sighed, i already knew i wasn't gonna like this 'thing' kairi dragged me to, and now his friend works here? god.
