'have you ever had a boyfriend?' kairi said trying to make small talk with mattia. mattia shook his head no, 'of course not, i've never even had a friend'
'never?!' kairi's voice raised a bit in shock, how could mattia never have a friend, like who wouldn't want to befriend him. 'have you ever wanted friends... or a boyfriend?' kairi probed, wanting to figure out the mystery of the boy who hasn't had friends.
'it might be fun to have a friend or two, but i like the world of fiction more than reality' mattia answered, making kairi gasp a bit. 'that explains why you're always reading.' kairi nodded as he looked up at the posters on the walls.
'y'know i broke up with my boyfriend recently' kairi changed the subject, mattia's eyes glanced at kairi's blank expression. mattia knew from books that people are usually sad when they break up, but kairi wasn't.
'because he knows you're going to die soon?' the boy questioned. 'no, he was very toxic. and i told no one that but you silly' kairi giggled. 'it's someone you know, i think, he's in our home room' kairi stated, as if mattia knew any of his classmates except kairi. and now alejandro.
'see, he was a great friend. but once we got into the relationship, he became controlling and very... angry. very angry, sometimes he'd just yell for no reason' kairi ranted as mattia listened intently. he liked when kairi told him stuff, he felt very included into kairi's life.
kairi picked at the leftover cake as genesis, alvaro, anna, and jayde walked into the bakery. jayde immediately noticed kairi, but stayed quiet because she didn't want to disturb their peace.
but anna noticed too and quickly tapped genesis. genesis looked at the shorter girl who was pointing across the shop at the two boys. genesis huffed as she started walking over to them, 'kairi!' she called causing the boy to turn around.
'gen! what're you doing here?! mattia this is genesis, my best friend.' mattia payed no attention to the pink haired girl who was obviously mad.
'kai... why didn't you tell me you were hanging with him? you just blew off our plans with no explanation?!' the girl confessed, kairi's eyes softened, 'gen it's not like that, i just wanna hang with him' kairi admitted causing his best friend to sigh.
'okay but next time, don't lie. just say that' were her final words before walking back to her other group of friends. kairi nodded then looked at mattia, he was quietly finishing his slice of cake.
'she's very protective, sorry. we've been friends since middle school actually. at first i thought she was pretty scary, but then we talked and became friends instantly' kairi spilled with a smile.
'now cmon, i'm full of cake' kairi giggle as he grabbed him and mattia's plates, tossing them into the kitten themed trash can. he walked back over to mattia, watching the taller place an $100 bill on the check then walking over to kairi.
kairi knew the bill was at least $30, so mattia didn't easily have to waste money like that. but he bit his tongue as the two left the small bakery. kairi grabbed mattia's hand and looked up at him, 'wanna go do something fun?'
you guys fw genesis? in the movie, the best friend is WAY meaner to haruki ( who mattia is portrayed as ), but i decided to simmer it down for my book ❤️
