mattia held the book in his hands as if his life depended on it while he waited for his two guests. he looked around the small diner he was sitting in until he heard the bell from the front door ring. he looked over and there stood alvaro, behind him was genesis who had obviously wasn't doing well.
her usual pink hair was all disheveled like it hadn't been brushed in days and her clothes were baggy unlike her usual tennis skirts and baby shirts. alvaro looked saddened too, his eyes were dark underneath them and his eyes were bloodshot like he hadn't slept in weeks. but mattia couldn't say anything, today was the second day out of three weeks that he actually brushed his teeth.
alvaro looked around until he saw the boy and he smiled weakly at him. genesis saw him too, but she didn't have any strength to make any facial expressions. they walked over and before sitting down, alvaro gave mattia a hug. it was well needed though, it almost made him break down but he held it together.
'hi mattia, how are you?' alvaro whispered but there was no need because the restaurant was empty except for them. 'i'm getting there i guess, um how are you? and how are you genesis?' mattia asked making the girl look up at him with eyes full of hurt.
'i'm okay.. um' alvaro started, it was obviously awkward and there was thick tension between the teens. 'why are we here?' genesis croaked, she sounded as if she hadn't spoke for weeks and judging by alvaro's expression, she probably hasn't spoken since kairi's passing.
'um sorry if you were busy or i interrupted your day but kairi would've wanted me to do this, no matter how i feel about you, kairi would've urged me to do this...' mattia started as he slid the book across the table to the other two.
'what is this?' she asked in a quiet tone while alvaro opened it to the front. in kairi's handwriting stated the words 'living with dying'
'kairi's diary. he wrote it as a goodbye for everyone and told his mom to give it to me,' mattia began before genesis interrupted him, 'goodbye?! what-,'
'kairi was... sick, he had a pancreas disease that he couldn't recover from. this year was going to be his last year un- unfortunately it was tak- taken from him' mattia spoke, beginning to cry. 'oh- when did he tell you?'
'the beginning of our friendship..' mattia answered the girl as he wiped his eye. alvaro was silent though, he didn't know how to cope with the news. 'did he ever tell you that he was going to tell us?' genesis asked again, holding back tears.
'no, not to me directly. he wrote you guys a letter' mattia informed, taking the book from alvaro and flipping to their page. he placed the book back in front of them and watched them read over the page, their faces morphing into different emotions after each line.
mattia didn't know what their page said, he didn't read anyone else's page but his own, out of privacy and respect for kairi. but mattia could tell that the page did have some emotional things on it because the two both had silent tears rolling down their faces.
when they finished it, they looked up at each other then at mattia. 'd- did you read this mattia?' genesis mumbled while more tears poured out. mattia shook his head making her nod. 'thank you, mattia. thank you for being in kai's life. he deserved you, you didn't deserve the way i treated you though. i'm so sorry for the things i've done and said to you...' genesis sobbed.
mattia furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, 'it's okay genesis, i- i don't care about it anymore.' mattia stated as he reached out for her hand, genesis started crying loudly not being able to hold in her sobs any longer. alvaro just stared at the table, his tears coming out slower then genesis' but they were definitely there.
'no, no it's not,' she sniffled while holding mattia's hand tightly. 'do you wanna become friends?'
