It's quiet. No one is on watch. There is no response to you yelling for the gate to be opened. You look over at Clementine with a concerned look. She tries to comfort you, but you shrug it off. You grab onto the wall and start to climb it. All while Clementine is begging you to be careful.
You reach the top after taking a few risks on the way up. Clementine calls up to you, but you don't reply. You're to busy staring at the body of the lookout. Violet lays against the wall, a bullet hole in her neck and left eye.
You look down at the inside of the Rest Stop. Everyone, is on the ground... Probably dead. You don't know what to do. You're sad, mad, scared, but most of all worried. Worried about Marina.
You hurry down as fast as you can.
Clem: Y/N!
You can hear Clementine yelling from the other side of the gate. You hit the ground and run towards your house. You aren't even paying attention to the bodies you're running past.
You arrive. There's a body in front of the house. You turn her over. There's bullet holes in every part of her body.
You: I'm sorry Brooklyn... I'm sure you did your best.
Maybe her dying in front of your house means she kept Marina safe. You step over her and slowly open the door.
You: Marina?
The whole place is a mess. Everything is wrecked, and scattered around. This has torn any hope you had left, away from you. You don't want to go into her room, but you can't keep your body from going.
The door is cracked open. You press your hand up against it, but don't push yet.
You: Marina?
There's no reply, so you push it open.
You: Marina!
Clem: Shit!
Clementine swerves the car, startled by your scream. She quickly gains control again. You slump back into your seat and take a few deep breaths.
Clem: That's the third one this week.
You don't say anything.
Clem: I tried waking you up a few minutes ago when you started mumbling, but you wouldn't.
You reach over and turn the air down so that you can cool off.
Clem: Are you ok?
You: What do you think?
Clem: Hey, don't get shitty with me.
You: I'm sorry. I didn't mean...
You trail off.
Clem: Do you want to talk about it?
You sigh.
Clem: You don't have to.
You: You and I both know you don't mean that.
Clem: Yeah, I'm probably just going to bug you until you tell me.
You give a light chuckle.
You: Well, we got back to the Rest Stop. I had to climb the wall again because no one would open the gate. When I got to the top I found everyone dead. I ran to our house to check on Marina. Brooklyn was outside, shot to death. There were at least a dozen holes. I went inside, the house was a wreck. I went into Marina's room, and I found her... Dead... That's when I woke up.
Clem: That's still getting to you?
You: I wasn't there, and my entire community was slaughtered.
Clem: It won't happen again. You took care of Amy.
You: Those raiders earlier. They knew who I was. What if they marched down there while we're gone?
Clem: Brooklyn will handle it then.
You: What if she can't?
Clem: Then it's still not on you.
You: Yes it is! I didn't have to take this job, but I did.
Clem: You want to turn around?
She sounds annoyed.
Clem: You just try and carry the blame for everything that happens. I hate seeing you do that to yourself. It wasn't your fault what happened to the Rest Stop, and it wouldn't be if it was attacked again.
You: I have a job Clem... To protect you and Marina... I'm terrified of failing.
Clem: So we do our best, to make sure that it doesn't happen.
You: I... I'm scared Clem... I just saw Marina in a pool of her own blood. I imagine she was crying for our help. My help... And I wasn't there.
Clementine stops the car and puts it in park.
Clem: It was dream. It wasn't real.
You wipe your eyes.
Clem: Do you want to turn around?
You: No... No let's keep going.
She puts a hand on your arm, and rubs her thumb up and down.
Clem: I was always scared I couldn't keep Aj alive at first. I did everything I could to make sure he lived.
You don't say anything.
Clem: I understand... But, it hasn't happened. I'm still here, and Marina is still alive. You've done just fine, and I'm sure you're going to continue to do just fine.
You nod your head.
Clem: Now, will you please hug me?
You smile and lean over to hug her.
Clem: You've been a great dad, and a great husband. Don't tell yourself otherwise... I love you.
You: I love you too.
She pulls away from you and puts the car back in drive.
Clem: Now, we still have a long way to go. Let's get back to it.
