You start to rouse. You can feel the cool air of the inside of the van on your face. The rest of you body is covered by the blankets you had brought along. Brooklyn should be next to you, but she isn't.

You: Brooklyn?

You call her name as you sit up and look around. She's not inside the van. Must have gone out to pee or something.

It's still slightly dark out, but the sky is a light tint of red. The Sun must be coming up. You crack your back and your neck as you get up. The floor of the van isn't the best spot to sleep, but you didn't have much of a choice. You shuffle to the back door of the van and open it. The winter air hits you like a ton of bricks. It's colder than it has been. There's even a few snowflakes falling from the sky.

You stand up and stretch a little.

Brooklyn: Good morning.

You flinch when you hear her voice. It's from behind you, but you just got out of the van. How'd she get behind you? She wasn't in there.

You turn around. She's sitting atop the van, cross-legged.

You: Why are you up there?

Brooklyn: Waiting for the Sun.

You: It's too cold to be out here.

Brooklyn: Oh, it's fine.

You: It's snowing.

Brooklyn: Only a little bit.

You: You're crazy.

Brooklyn: Come up here. There's plenty of room.

You: Nah, I'm going in the van, and I'm turning on the heat.

Brooklyn: Please.

You stare up at her for a few seconds.

You: Fine.

You walk around the front of the van and climb up the hood. You're careful not to step on the windshield. You're careful not to put all your weight on one spot. You don't want to dent the thing too badly. You crawl over next to Brooklyn and sit down, dangling your legs over the side of the van.

Brooklyn: We would go outside in the morning anytime we got the chance. Just to watch the sunrise... It was always quiet, and no one was around. We got to enjoy a little peace every morning.... Knowing that the peace was only a luxury, and could be taken at any time... Eventually, I found myself just doing it. Even when I was away.

You: I guess you knew I was going to ask.

Brooklyn: Mhm.

She's staring at the sky, eagerly awaiting the Sun.

You: This is a great way to start off the day. I'm usually up, but most of the time I'm stuck in the bed. Clementine usually sleeps longer than me, so I have to wait for her... It bugs me a little bit, but I love it. Maybe because I realize I get to wake up to her every morning. Or maybe it's because I'm one of the only people who will ever see her with her mouth open, drooling all over her pillow... I'm sorry. I'll shut up.

Maybe you shouldn't be talking about you're happy, loving relationship. But surprisingly, she's smiling at you.

Brooklyn: Violet always woke up first, but she normally woke me up as she got out of bed.

The Sun is starting to peak out. The sky and clouds are turning a beautiful array of different colors.

Brooklyn: This is the first one I'm going to watch without her.

You look over at her. She's smiling, even as she starts to cry. You reach over and squeeze her in a side hug.

You: I'll leave you alone if you want me to.
