Chapter 24

We bolted from the house into Darry's truck and drove as quick as we could to the Matthews'.

My stomach felt sick and I was breathing heavily. Did Two Bit go through with it? My mind was racing with a million questions as Darry pulled up to house. Soda was the first to make it to the door followed by Dally as they tried to open the door.

"It's locked." Soda yelled frantically.

"Dal do you know how to-" Johnny began but Dally cut him off.

"Yeah yeah. Move over!" He shouted at Soda as he picked the lock.

The door swung open and everyone ran up the stairs. Dally was still first and didn't hesitate to pick that lock. the door flew open and everyone piled in. We all looked around, scares to what we would find.

"I wasn't sure if it was a herd of elephants or my best friends that came to my house."

We all whipped around to find a very sickly looking Two Bit. The bags under his eyes had grown, his hair was a mess, he was pale and had obviously lost weight.

"Thank god, Two Bit. You had us all scared to death." Darry said quietly.

"Yeah, about that," he started nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was going to do that tonight, but now I can't."

I sucked in a breath. We were right on time.

"Well I'm glad you're ok there, Two, we'd miss them jokes of yours." Johnny commented and everyone laughed and nodded.

"Glad to know that my jokes are appreciated, maybe I'll have to say more." Two Bit winked and everyone shook their heads.

A chorus of no's filtered through the room and everyone burst out laughing.

Right then, I wished we still had Mel. She would have laughed to see everyone together and laughing and just talking. As one big family.
