Chapter 13

| Mel's POV |

I rested my head on Johnny's shoulder. What did Cherry want? She was probably here to sweep Ponyboy off his feet and take him on date. Johnny put his arm around me.

"You okay?" He whispered in my ear.

"Yeah, I guess." I whispered back.

"I hate seeing you sad."

I smiled at him. I loved this kid so much. I could never love him like I did Pony though. I just don't know if he'll ever love me.

My thoughts were broken when the door slammed shut. Mine and Johnny's heads both snapped up.

There stood Pony, red faced, Cherryless.

"Where's Cherry?" Darry asked, trying not to smirk.

"She's outside." He said. Pulling my head back into his lap.

"Oh." Two Bit couldn't hide his shock.

"Mel can Soda and I talk to you in the kitchen for a moment please?" Dally asked me, giving me the listen to me look.

"Uh, sure?"

I stepped into the kitchen and Dally and Soda stared me down.

"What?" I asked, a little annoyed.

"You like Pony." Dally said matter-of-factly.

I blushed. "How'd you know?"

They looked at each other. "It's pretty obvious, Mel." Soda laughed.

"Oh. Do you think he knows?"

"Pony is so obvious to everything. He wouldn't notice if you died your hair pink." Dally laughed at himself then looked through the fridge for a beer.

"You won't him, will you?" I asked them.

"Nah, but I have a secret maybe you should know." Soda started but we quickly shut up when Ponyboy walked in to the kitchen.

"Hey Mel, can I talk to you?" Pony asked.

I awkwardly glanced at the ground. "Yeah. Sure."

He grabbed my hand and pulled me onto the porch. I looked at when he wasn't looking and just took him in. His beautiful hazel eyes, his perfect pink lips, his not so chubby cheeks-

"Mel? I uh, I really like you. I have since the first day I met you. I understand if you don't feel the same, I just wanted to let you know."

I was stunned. "Ponyboy, I've been waiting for you to say that for five years." He smiled and pulled me in.
