Chapter 3

~ Mel's POV ~

Saying I was pissed was an understatement. I had told Ponyboy before that I didn't like Cherry, yet he doesn't believe me or care. I heard quick feet behind me and whipped around to come face to face with Johnny.

"Hey Johnnycake." I said softly. "Come to yell at me?"

His ears turned pink and shook his head. "I agree."

I smiled. "What would I do without you, kid?"

He smiled and scratched the back of his head. "Pony's pretty upset."

My smile vanished. "Serves him right."

We began to make our way back to Curtis home, screw the movie. We made small talk, mostly about Cherry and Ponyboy, when it slipped out.

"Sometimes I wish that kid would just open his eyes and see that she's just using him. I wish he could see that there are people who really just want him... Like me." My hands flew over my mouth as my eyes went wide.

Johnny just gave me a smile. "I figured that out a while ago, Mel. And no, I don't like you, remember when we made that promise?"

*Flashback (5 years ago)*

"Johnny! Stop!" I giggled as his fingers dug into my ribs.

"Nooo!" He laughed back and finally stopped.

"Hey Johnny?" I asked.

"Yeah?" He answered, playing with my pigtails.

"I love you." I said happily. "But not like mommies and daddies do. Like brothers and sisters do."

"I promise you, no matter what, I'll always love you like a sister, not a mommy." He whispered.

"I promise that I'll always love you like a brother, not a daddy."

*Flashback over*

I smiled at the memory.

"I'm so lucky to have you, Johnny." I said, ruffling his hair.

"If I didn't have you, Mel, I don't know if I'd be here." He whispered.

My vision became blurry with tears and a tear fell onto my cheek. "See what you did now?" I laughed nervously.

Johnny stopped me and pulled me into his arms.

"I love you, Melody Matthews."

"I love you too, Johnny Cade."

When we arrived back at the Curtis house, only Two Bit remained.

"Hey Two." I greeted my brother, hugging him.

"Hey Mel, Johnny. Where's Ponyboy?"

I let out a sigh. "I admitted how I felt about Cherry Valance and he flipped at me so I told him off and then Johnny took my side." I said smugly.

Two Bit's eyes widened.

"Hopefully he'll get it through his thick skull, it's taken long enough."

We all turned and saw Darry leaning in the doorway.

"You don't like her?" Johnny asked.

"Who does?" Soda yelled from the kitchen.

"The hell are you talking about?"
