Chapter 15

MAKO POV

Dinner went by fast and before you could notice, it was already time for bed. It was quiet, quick and very awkward between me and Ryujin. As she ate, the invisible line between us was so tight. She would continuously take short looks at me and whenever I tried to look back at her, she would look away.

As we all parted ways to get read for bed, I happen to go the same way as Ryujin. My brother comes along to join me since we sleep in the same room. "So, Ryujin," Bolin calls out to her, "Did you ever know that Mako used to have a crush on you?" She turns back to Bolin, more shocked and flustered than before. Before he could go up to her, I pull him towards me by the back of his collar. "Don't. She's already nervous around me. There shouldn't be anymore tension than that." Bolin laughs at me, almost tearing up. "I think she likes you, brother," he said as he laughed at me. I let go of him but before I could say anything, Ryujin was already in close proximity of us. "What was it that you were going to say Bolin," she asked. I froze up at the sound of her voice but Bolin seemed to have the most fun out of this. "Let me tell you a story. Pretend there's a flashback scene," Bolin announced so grandly and gestures his hands like he was showing her something.

"What?! You like Shady Shin's sister," my brother exclaimed loudly. I had to cover his mouth quickly so that no one around us would know. We were in an alley after all. Anyone could hear us. "Yes," I exhaled, "But DON'T mention this to anyone!" I let my hand relax to my side as I exhaled all the stress away from that tiny moment. "B...but, THIS IS BIG NEWS," my brother shouted once again. "Bolin! Just...it's basically forbidden. I can't like the person I protect. I basically swore an oath once I joined the gang and accepted my duty. We're only doing this for the money. Just remind me of that whenever I happen to get all googly eye over Ryujin." Bolin simply nodded but he couldn't hold back his smile. I rolled my eyes and turned my back, facing away from him. Even after all that, after all the limitations and rules, I couldn't help but smile about her.

"Wow," Ryujin said. Her mouth was slightly opened from awe. It was like a little "o". I couldn't help but blush from her cuteness though. Pull it together, Mako. "But we were kids back then," she laughed, basically brushing it off, "Especially since we were teenagers so it was bound to happen." Bolin placed his index finger on his chin, looking like he was thinking. What is he up to now? "But did you ever like Mako," he asked her. The sheer panic on my face quickly overtook me as Bolin asked the question. I could see him enjoying himself but I was not. And this was what he wanted. "I...actually don't remember," Ryujin answered, "But I feel like I probably did. When I find out, I'll tell you." She and Bolin laughed while I was next to them, suffering and panicking. "But that's very cute of you Mako," she said as she blushed. Ryujin seemed to be more calm now than before. It must be because of Bolin. Wait, does she like Bolin instead? I'm probably overthinking it. "You guys would make suck a cute couple," Bolin said as he hugged us both together. As soon as he said that, she reverted back to her flustered state. Her ears were red as well as her face. She was quiet and super shy. It was like whenever I was being mentioned, she would become less interactive with me. "Well...I'll leave you two alone. You guys probably want some alone time and some time to catch up," Bolin said as he let go of us, "I'm pretty sure you guys are using the same bathroom right? None of my business." He shrugged and walked away to our room. Now it was just me and Ryujin. She continued to walk with me until we reached the bathroom.

"I'm...going to grab my stuff in my room." She said as she walked back to her room. She quickly pivoted her feet and speed walked over. "Hmm, okay," I shrugged. I entered the bathroom, feeling bad about the situation between us. Is there even a situation between us? I began to brush my teeth, waiting for Ryujin. I brushed all over and shortly after, Ryujin enters the bathroom with all her toothbrush and clothes to change in. "I assume that you'll probably just...I can just change in my room. Sorry." With my toothbrush in my mouth, I couldn't really say anything. "No, ith's phwine," I muffled, "Dwournt worry abauf ith." I receive a light giggle from the girl as she starts to put her stuff down. "You sound so funny, Mako," she laughed.

"You sounds so funny, Mako." Her smile made my whole world turn. If I could do anything to protect that smile, I would. I have a job to do and I must do it right.

I get hit with a wave of deja vu as her voice rings through my head. My face relaxes into a gentle smile but I don't think she could've noticed. Ryujin began to brush her teeth and the whole time we were in there together, it was completely silent. I finished brushing and proceeded to comb out my hair for the night.

"I'm going to change in my room," she said to me as I was fixing my hair, "So...goodnight." Ryujin exited the room, leaving just me in there. I sat in the bathroom, contemplating about her. "Today, she was just very, I don't know," I said, thinking out loud, "I don't think she really likes the idea of us being a couple. She would get so shy and red like she was blushing. But with Bolin, she seemed normal." I sighed deeply and looked at myself through the mirror. "Was I ever enough for her back then?"

I exited the bathroom and walked to my bedroom. Bolin was already fast asleep but as for me? I couldn't sleep at all. Ryujin was constantly on my mind for the whole night. I couldn't stop thinking about getting her approval now and back then. As I thought to myself, I checked the time. "It's already four in the morning," I said to myself as I looked at the clock above the shelf. I exhaled through my nose and closed my eyes, hoping I would fall asleep that way.

I woke up to the sound of Bolin's loudness as he got ready for the day. "Pabu! Pabu! Not on Mako," he exclaimed as I slowly began to wake up. On top of me, I see a pair of underwear in Pabu's mouth. I shot up quickly and catch the little fire ferret in my hand as he fell towards me. "What's going on," I asked my brother. I looked down to see him have no boxers on. It was just his plain dick out. I covered my eyes with my hand and looked the other way. "Put some pants on!" I shifted out of bed and rushed to the bathroom. As I opened the door, Ryujin was already there, brushing her hair. "G...good morning Mako," she stuttered as her face became red all over again. She quickly noticed my agitated face and asked, "What's wrong?" She was always this caring even towards the worst of the worst. "Bolin." She tilted her head to the side and said, "Well, just hide here for now." I nodded and began to wash up for the day. As she did the final knot on her bow, she turned towards me and asked, "D...does it look okay?" I could see the slight blush on her cheek as she asked me. At least she's a bit more comfortable around me now. "Yea," I responded, turning my head to look at her. When I looked, I felt a gush of nostalgia hit me. All the feelings were coming back to me. Was I starting to catch feelings for Ryujin again? "Y...you look nice," I stuttered only and nothing else. I wanted to say more but I was so engulfed by her beauty that I was speechless. She pulled a strand behind her ear in a shy manner. "Thank you," she said and smiled, "I'll see you later?" I nodded at her, "Yes, I'll see you at breakfast.
