you plopped on your bed, groaning as you stared at the timeline of your freshly edited video. editing was supposed to be fun... why did it already feel like homework?

after an hour of dragging clips around, you called it quits and tossed yourself onto the blankets.

a soft knock made you sit up. "may i come in?" it was toby.

"yes!" you muffled, burying your face in the pillow.

she stepped in and closed the door behind her. "did you hear what's going on?"

curious, you pushed yourself up. "no... what is it?"

her expression wavered, worried. "fitz... he's going to be on love or host..."

you froze, not sure if she was joking. instinctively, you grabbed your phone and scrolled to austin's twitter. yep. it was real.

"oh... wow. okay, that's... what the fuck," you muttered.

toby plopped next to you. "wait... did you guys... stop talking? he told me he was planning on asking you to be his girlfriend soon."

you shook your head, still processing. before you could think too much, you did the only thing that seemed sane, you called him.

he picked up after a few rings, cheerful as ever. "hey, baby!"

"hey... uh..." you faltered, glancing at toby. she mouthed, ask him about the show! you gave her a thumbs up and took a deep breath.

"so... what's this show thing? love or host? what's going on?"

he hesitated, then explained, "i scheduled it with austin ages ago. it's my turn, I can't just leave him hanging. i'm not picking anyone, i'm not entertaining it... i like you, and only you."

toby rolled her eyes dramatically. you just sighed, lying back on your bed. "okay..."

you hung up before he could say more. trusting him... right now, you just couldn't.

"so... what now?" she asked, settling next to you.

"guess we'll just have to watch it and see if he means it," you muttered.

later, you found yourself on the back porch, staring at the sky. memories of losing fitz to that dating-show girl hit you like a punch. everyone had tried to console you, claiming he was just chasing clout, but the photos and videos of them happy together made it impossible to believe.

the ache was still there. he had done exactly what he promised he wouldn't.

a hand on your back made you jump. "oh! sorry... didn't mean to scare you," mason's thick accent rang out.

"i'm fine..." you whispered, resting your head on his shoulder. tears slipped out despite your best effort.

he tilted your face to meet his gaze, gently brushing them away. "i know you're still hurting, y/n."

"i... i guess the whole world still knows," you choked out, struggling to breathe.

seeing your uneven breaths, mason's eyes softened. "i'll get you some water. stay right here."

while he disappeared inside, you turned back to the sunset, letting the fading light calm your racing thoughts.

the patio doors creaked, and mason returned, holding a glass of water. he paused, rummaging in his pocket.

"here," he said, handing you the water, "and... this is also for you." a familiar candy.

you smiled, taking it and giving him a quick side hug. ripping the wrapper open, you shared a piece with him.

mouth full, he grinned sheepishly. "i know this won't erase the sadness... but i wanted you to feel a little better."

you poked him playfully. "thanks... you're doing a really good job at that."

for the first time in a while, you laughed. the ache in your chest softened just a little. maybe life could still surprise you in the sweetest ways.
