he hadn't been the same since you passed.
even though it was normal for him to post less or skip streams now and then, he hadn't touched any social media in over two years.
the podcast wasn't the same either. he didn't talk as much, didn't laugh as freely, because you weren't there, sitting close by, nudging him, smiling at him like you always did.
loud, repeated bangs echoed from the other side of his door. when he didn't answer, the guys tried to open the locked door, again, unsuccessfully. nothing had changed.
"fitz, open the door, please!" swagger shouted.
he sighed, finally giving up. dragging himself out of his messy bed, he opened the door. "what is it?" he groaned, irritation barely masking the weight he carried inside.
swagger frowned but stepped in anyway, helping cameron tidy up the chaos of his room, even though he knew it was only a matter of time before cam would mess it up again.
when swagger placed the last pillow on the bed, he looked up and froze. cameron sat on the edge of the mattress, hood pulled over his face, favorite hoodie, the one you bought him clinging to his shoulders. Tears streaked down his cheeks in quiet, uncontrolled streams.
finally, a whisper escaped his lips, barely audible "i miss her..."
soft sobs followed, his chest rising and falling as he struggled to catch his breath.
gentle knocks came at the door. someone else approached. "hey, fitz... how about we go out? maybe get some fresh air... clear your mind a bit?" toby suggested, her hand brushing his back softly.
swagger left, leaving cameron alone with her. "get dressed. we'll be back for you in a bit," she said, hugging him. he returned a small, hesitant hug, clinging for a moment to the comfort.
once she left, cameron showered quickly, pulled on some jeans, then rifled through his closet, finding nothing that felt right.
he sighed and made his way to your room. you had always borrowed his clothes without hesitation, joking that if he wanted them back he could get them from your closet.
but now... it wasn't the same.
he didn't have to knock, didn't have to argue with you about reclaiming what was yours, couldn't ask if he could spend the night in your room, or if you could spend the night in his.
you weren't there anymore.
all the little moments, the laughter, the teasing, the quiet companionship, were memories now, frozen in time, impossible to continue.
he slid the closet door open and pulled out your favorite hoodie, the navy blue one he knew you loved most. just seeing the color made his chest ache with longing. he wanted to cry but forced himself to hold it together. the guys were waiting to take him out, he couldn't break down just yet.
his eyes wandered around your room and landed on a polaroid of the two of you, taken the day he gave you your promise ring.
his throat tightened. the necklace you'd given him with your ring rested in his hand, a painful reminder of all that was gone.
one last glance around the room, a slow exhale, and he closed the door behind him. he made his way downstairs, hoodie clutched to his chest.
"you want some water?" mason asked, opening the fridge. he paused, seeing cameron's face, realizing his friend was hurting.
fitz glanced at the fridge, then immediately looked away. "fuck..." he groaned, hiding his face.
confused, mason opened his soda. "what's the matter?" he asked softly, forgetting the fridge was covered with pictures of you with the group, even a whiteboard with "i love you all!" in your handwriting.
breathing grew heavier, and cameron couldn't hold back anymore. "everything reminds me of her... i can't stop thinking of her."
mason tried to lighten the mood. "what about... this trash can? do you think of her when you see it?"
fitz rolled his eyes.
"oi, not funny, mace," ryan interjected, like he had anticipated some stupid joke.
hands raised in defense, mason chuckled. "i'm sorry... i miss her too, mate. just... trying to make you laugh."

later, the group went to a small café and then walked to the nearby boardwalk, sitting down on a bench to talk and joke.
cameron participated slowly at first, adding in from time to time, occasionally laughing at the jokes.
matt nudged him gently. "hey... you feeling any better?"
he fiddled with his necklace, eyes downcast. "a little," he muttered.
"i just miss her so much, you know..." he said again, voice breaking slightly, but nobody minded. they understood.
"it was shocking to see you settle down... we were already planning your wedding," ryan joked, causing a small, bittersweet chuckle to escape cameron.
he shut his eyes, the cool breeze brushing his face, and let his mind wander through the memories of you, laughing, leaning on him, stealing his hoodies, holding his hand. tears fell despite himself, quickly wiped away with the sleeves of his hoodie.
"cam... there's a butterfly on you..." toby whispered.
opening his eyes, he spotted a navy blue butterfly perched delicately on his knee. "it's her favorite color..." he murmured, voice soft, eyes glistening.
"you know what they say about butterflies, right?" toby added shyly. "if they land on you, it could be a message from someone you love."
swagger nodded, confirming quietly, "i heard about that."
cameron smiled, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"what if it's y/n... trying to tell me something?"
he gently extended a finger. the butterfly climbed onto it.
"let's try something," he whispered. he placed it on mason's shoulder. almost immediately, it returned to his knee. he repeated this with the others, always returning to him.
a small, genuine smile broke across his face as he wiped his tears. she was still with him, in her way.
"yup... that's definitely y/n," mason snickered.
cameron laughed softly, breathing in the salty ocean air, heart aching but filled with love.
