you trudged behind swagger, who was wrestling your luggage up the front steps like it had a mind of its own. the house you'd been avoiding for months suddenly felt... heavy. familiar, but heavy.
he set your bags down at the top of the stairs and gave you a pointed look. "i made sure none of the boys went messing around in your room. you know where you're staying."
you nodded, stomach twisting in that bittersweet mix of anticipation and dread. two months away felt like a lifetime, and maybe it had been. as you made your way to your bedroom, memories tumbled through your mind: the laughter, the stupid inside jokes, the quiet mornings spent together... and how different everything could have been if you hadn't run.
you flopped onto your bed, staring at the photos scattered across your desk. every picture a little punch to the gut, a reminder that you'd left a piece of yourself behind. stupidly, this had been the first time you'd tried to walk away from him, and somehow, he hadn't let you.
your week had been absolute hell, your demons clawing a little deeper than usual. you needed a break. a place with no notifications, no schedules, just family... maybe a few bottles of wine too.
but, of course, it wasn't the calm you wanted, it was him. you missed him like air, like you were always forgetting to breathe. he was on your mind constantly.
sitting on the edge of your bed, you traced your fingers over the frames of pictures showing you two together. tossing yourself fully back, you whispered to yourself: is he even going to notice I'm back? does he even care anymore?
stupid thoughts, all of them. you hated thinking that you'd almost left without him still being yours. and yet, he had made it clear: it was always been you.
back home in melbourne, surrounded by family and wine, you'd tried to drown the guilt, the longing, but nothing could erase the ache of leaving him. it was too late to take words back, too late to fix the small regrets that piled up every time you blinked.
⸻
he walked you to your gate, hand clasped around yours like he might never let go. and truthfully, neither of you did.
almost time to leave, you turned to him, holding back tears you both knew were coming. "just... hear me out before i go. there's one thing you need to know."
he nodded, patient, frowning just a little.
"i... i still love you."
his hands cupped your cheeks, and before you could second-guess yourself, he pulled you in for one last, lingering kiss. the kind that makes your chest ache in all the best ways. he pulled back just enough to murmur against your lips, "don't forget me."
you rolled your eyes, smiling through the sting of leaving. never.
buckled in your seat, you texted him, fingers flying: "don't have too much fun without me."
then, another: "try not to love anyone else... i'll be back soon."
the flight attendant's voice cut across the cabin, "now, please, phones on airplane mode." you hit send anyway. a little selfish, a little desperate, but honest.
this wasn't the first time you'd left like this, but you prayed it was the last.
⸻
you tried to sleep, but a thick accent pierced the quiet.
"ello?"
your eyes shot open. mason. at your door.
"what is it," you groaned.
"cam's here. he wants to talk but... he's being a pussy. will you come downstairs?"
"what—no! i'm scared!" you admitted, unashamed. mason rolled his eyes and left the door cracked open.
before you could react, he swooped in, tossing you over his shoulder like a ragdoll.
"goddammit, mason!"
"sorry, y/n, it was gonna happen one way or another."
you kicked and squirmed, but eventually gave up, realizing some battles weren't worth fighting, especially when it came to being delivered to your crush like middle school all over again.
matt and toby waved awkwardly as mason deposited you near the front door. "he's in the car," he muttered, pushing you forward.
stepping outside, you froze. there he was, leaning casually against his car, the way he always looked effortless.
"cam..."
he bolted, abandoning all pretense, and hugged you like he'd been holding back for months. forever, you thought. every demon, every mistake, it melted away in that instant.
a tear slipped from your eye. "i'm sorry, cam. i understand if you..."
"shhh," he whispered, pressing his finger to your lips. he knew. he always knew. space, time, battles, it didn't matter. he was yours.
"just promise you'll never leave me again. you have me, y/n," he breathed, eyes searching yours.
you nodded, voice trembling. "i promise. i... i love you, cam."
"i love you too, y/n," he smiled, full and soft.
and then, inevitably, voices broke the spell.
"aww! now kiss!" toby shouted loud enough for the neighbors to hear.
your eyes went wide. cam smirked, nudging your chin toward him, as if saying, well, what are we waiting for?
and in that moment, you did.
