Sage's POV

Our plan to take Clarke to her tent or ours is interrupted by a red flare flying through the sky and the camps below us erupting in cheers. Everyone around us stops talking, walking, and a few even drop what's in their hands while looking up in the sky. No one would've thought he would be able to take the acid fog down. Especially the grounders who seriously doubted Bellamy's abilities from the start. Instead our feet have a mind of their own and somehow we almost run into Lexa while she walks out of her tent with wide eyes. After days of waiting and preparing for another way to get into the mountain she was indescribably happy seeing the signal flare. She's so excited about what this means, that she can finally go to war, that she almost doesn't notice that we ran into her. But once she does her eyes land on Clarke before they land on Octavia and I but they still hold the same excitement nonetheless. Seeing me standing there, not showing my anger towards her makes her sigh in relief. She still has her second who's just as excited for the war to start and it's noticeable she already regrets trying to kill us. "Bellamy did it," the three of us say while Lexa still seems entranced by the flare and our presence, her eyes quickly darting between us. Then words we never would've expected out of the commander fall from her lips, "You were right to have faith in him." For her to say this must mean someone has finally tested her trust issues and that she finally gave into her feelings. Usually her paranoia and those issues override her feelings and force her to push them down because of the belief of feelings making commander's weak. That she'll be left exposed and her decision making skills will be affected by them if she doesn't suppress them. But judging by the blonde's face, she must be the reason she was able to utter those words. Everyone around can feel how proud and surprised she is at the girl and her admission, but I feel a sense of love there too. They finally, hopefully, have a mutual understanding of their feelings for one another and hopefully Clarke told her about how she doesn't feel ready quite yet. If they play their cards right this could be a truly interesting but beautiful relationship, one that I'll definitely have to keep an eye on. Once the flare falls out of sight we're all broken out of our selective trances and look over at Lexa who's turning back to her normal self. One that is cold hearted, ruthless, and annoyingly closed off from the world around her. The side of her that's meant to be a leader and a powerful warrior. Looking more at Octavia and I she answers our unspoken question by saying, "Now we fight." Knowing she's now going to address her people I step out of the way and take my place right behind her while we wait for her guards to get everyone's attention. This proves quite difficult because not everyone can see her all the way across the huge plain. This means not everyone will hear her either but once a few hear her message it'll quickly spread like wildfire. One clan will pass it along to another until everyone joins in on the call to battle. Sounding their horns effectively shuts up the first few rows of warriors and she's finally able to officially start the war. But first she takes a moment and soaks in the feeling of so many people under her command. So many people that are willing to fight for her. So many people that blindly follow what she says without question. A feeling that I can see is extremely addicting but equally overwhelming as well. "To war," she yells in her native tongue and just like she hoped it quickly spread to the back lines.

Soon after we quickly got orders from her to walk over with Indra but in the sea of people rushing to follow her to battle it was impossible to find her. But orders are orders and we blindly walked across the front line where she said she would be. Through the woods we tried finding the woman but all with so many people running around in similar clothing made the task difficult. A few times we thought we found her but a simple turn of their head proved us wrong and sent us in another direction. After minutes with no such luck we stop and agree to continue once we reach the mountain. There it would be easy to find her because she'd be right by the commander's side. Our momentary stop in the search of Indra allows a certain blonde to finally make her presence known and effectively ruin our good spirits. She's followed us all the way from where we left the commander just to say that she wants us moved to the back lines instead. She may have been happy to see us and we're happy that she helped get Lexa to take off the kill order, but she's not happy about the missile. So much so that now the happiness about going into battle is quickly wearing off. "What do you want," she says coldly while sneakily grabbing my hand so we anchor each other down, just in case the following conversation sets us off. Looking over at the blonde I see her weighing her options one last time before finally speaking up. She was right to pause for a moment to at least think it over, but she should've stayed quiet. "I'm reassigning you to the rear guard." We both squeeze each other's hands so tightly that there's a possibility we're breaking them, but the pain is easily masked by our anger. Her reasoning makes us more mad and Octavia so wishes she could punch her. "We don't take orders from you Clarke. We take orders from Indra and Lexa." The blondes rationale to why she's attempting to reassign us to the rear guard only makes us more mad because she's trying to make it seem like she's trying to protect us. In reality she's just trying to keep us as far away from Lexa as possible which is impossible since I'm her second. At some point there will be times where I'm with the commander alone without anyone there to protect me, which means the blondes attempts are useless. If she still wants to kill me this is only delaying the inevitable. "One day hopefully you both will understand what I did," she says simply. She knew trying to reassign us on her own would go badly but she didn't expect us to throw everything right back in her face. Octavia on the other hand took it a step further and said that after this there's a huge possibility of never being friends with her again because of all the lives she could've saved but instead allowed to die. "I'll fight with you now because I want our friends back." Thankfully the moment she says that Indra finally walks up to us like she was listening the whole time and told Clarke that the commander was looking for her. Her sudden appearance and message makes it impossible for the blonde to respond because when the commander calls for you, you just have seconds to appear at her side. With a sigh she trudges away which allows Octavia and I to let go of each other's hands so that they can finally regain feeling in them while we listen to whatever Indra has to say about the situation.

The woman scoffs when we tell her that Clarke attempted to go over her authority and reassign us to the rear guard. She didn't go through all the trouble of training us just so we would sit back and watch everyone else fight while we desperately hoped that we'd get a small piece of the action. But she also knew that something else was deeply bothering Octavia. It was written all over her face since she saw Clarke and Lexa appear out of thin air without a scratch on them but before today there wasn't an opportunity to talk about it. "I know it still bothers you. That they knew about the missile," she says carefully. Although we're nowhere near the commander we still have to be extremely careful about what we say about the delicate situation. We don't know where her guards are and we cannot allow normal warriors and people around us hear what we're about to say either. It's an extremely delicate situation that could easily ruin the alliance. "How could you not hate them? Indra, they almost killed you." Although very true that their silence could've killed her, they aren't the ones who launched the missile, and she wasn't the target. The missile was meant to take out a lot of our warriors and destroy our supplies but they were hoping to take out Clarke, Lexa, and I with it as well, but they failed to do that. All three of us came out alive and surprisingly enough all the destruction didn't affect the massive army in the slightest and much of our supplies were spread throughout the forest. Not much was lost. "They didn't do anything. The enemy did. Lexa's a great commander because she's ruthless. That's how we'll win this battle," Indra says quickly. Her harsh words effectively end the conversation which was her goal because Octavia was venturing into dangerous territory. She was openly criticizing the commander and questioning her motives and that isn't acceptable in Indra's eyes. She trusts her wholeheartedly and does whatever she's told. Even if she doesn't like it or understand. While Octavia believes the tactics are wrong, Indra brushes them off as an act that couldn't be avoided because we're at war, which leaves me in a precarious situation. They both turn towards me for my opinion because I've forced myself to remain silent so I could avoid agreeing with the both of them. Their opinions make sense based on what they were taught and how they see the world and sadly both of their views make sense to me. While keeping the missile a secret almost killed me in the end and seeing how easily Clarke and Lexa accepted this made me angry, it still made perfect sense as to why they had to remain silent. Knowing that I'm somewhere in the middle both women roll their eyes and fully drop the subject. Too somehow boost our marale more and the people around us Indra speeds up while also screaming to effectively make the whole army join in. The resulting battle cry is so infectious that we have no choice but to join them as well and soon enough the whole woods erupts in a mixture of screaming and cheering, the sounds echoing throughout. Holding her hand again we both look around the woods with smiles on our faces because of how energized and ready we feel for what's about to come. Indra's plan worked and Octavia already seemingly forgot about everything that has bothered her and based off of her gentle grip on my hand, she's completely calm once again. Looking over at me she's trying desperately to find the right words to say because over the last few days her demeanor hasn't been the greatest and most of the time she's been cold and closed off. But her look alone made me squeeze her hand reassuringly that she has no reason to apologize because she had every right to be angry, and she had no reason to apologize. I'd rather deal with an angry Octavia that accidentally closes herself off rather than her purposely shutting me out and knowingly hurting me as a result. Her understanding that she may have put me through a few moments of hell washes away everything she did. To make sure she fully understands that everything between us is alright I lift her hand up to my lips and quickly kiss the back of hers and say, "You ready princess," with a smile.
