Blaine Devon Anderson was lonely. Yes, he did have friends but being lonely and alone are two very different things. The last time he had been in a relationship was in 8th grade when he had dated a girl with the name of Madi. He had written and sang a song for her at her house, and they had hugged each other. She broke up with him a week later. And the boy from Sadie Hawkins dance didn't really count because they hadn't talked since. Well, the boy hadn't picked up Blaine's calls since.
And in this moment, he was both lonely and alone. Blaine had just dropped Kurt off at his house. Kurt. He didn't know why, but Kurt had been on his mind lately. It was probably because they had been spending a lot of time together. And that their duet was awesome. Totally awesome. And even if Blaine did want to be more than friends, he didn't want to jeopardize their friendship. And Blaine knew nothing about romance. The last time he had asked a guy out, he had sung When I Get You Alone at a Gap and it hadn't gone well. The guy had gotten fired, and Blaine embarrassed. At least he had learned never to ¨bust a groove¨ in someone's workplace again. Finally, his last crush had been his best friend, Sam Evans. Sam had been cool with it thank goodness, but it hadn't changed the fact that he was straight and not interested in Blaine. Long story short, Blaine was unlucky in love.
These were his thoughts as he pulled into the driveway of the Anderson house. He was getting out of a car when he saw a 2008 Toyota Corolla. Oh no. He thought. This car belonged to his aunt and uncle. Well, his step-uncle. His third step-uncle. He tried not to judge, but that women went through men the same way he went through Katy Perry albums. And her kids. They were monsters. There were 6 total. One girl his age (Heather), two twin boys that were 10 (Jordan and Aaron), a five year old girl (Sami), and a little baby girl who never stopped crying (Michelle). But the worst of all was Chad. Chad was 19 and found anyway he could to make Blaine feel worthless. Even worse, Chad hadn't gotten accepted into any college so he still lived with his mother and stepfather.
Every so often these people would show up unannounced to his house and stay for weeks at a time. For no reason. Sighing, Blaine pulled his house key out of his pocket. This is going to be a long week. He thought as he unlocked the front door. As soon as he stepped into the house, Sami sprinted into him. At first he thought it was a hug, then saw Jordan running at full speed towards them.
CRASH!
Jordan flew into Sami and Blaine, crushing them against the big white door. Sami started shouting, and Jordan maniacally laughed. Trying to get away from them, he ran into the dining room. Sitting at the end of the mahogany dining table was Aunt Patty, wine glass in hand. Her powder blue blouse had a purple-red stain on it. Blaine pulled out his phone to pretend that he was texting someone, so she may think that he didn't see her. That of course didn't work.
"Blaine. Don't text while company is over. It's rude." Patty commented. She rolled her eyes like he was the rude one. "Come sit here. I haven't seen you in months. I thought that you would've grown at least a little bit. Anderson men are usually tall. Oh well, you are a little different than the rest of the family." She pulled out her phone to examine her hair, then gasped at her gray roots showing. Patty's made Blaine upset. She could cut him down without even trying to. He sat there, wanting to be anywhere else.
"Well, he must have gotten my side of the family's height. My parents are very short. So am I." Blaine's mother, Pam had swooped in. Blaine smiled at this, but Patty ignored this comment.
"So honey, how's your gay phase going?" Patty asked judgmentally. Blaine at this point was fed up. He was hoping to keep it together before he got to his room.
"Better than your marriage." He said. Sure that's a mean thing to say to your aunt, but can you blame him? "And it would be my 'bi phase' if you're going to try to insult me for my sexuality, at least use the correct terms." His aunt looked in shock, but Pam was trying to hide a smile.
"You know there are ways that you can fix this." Patty offered. "There are camps to help with his....condition. I could give you the number." Pam's smile faded. She was about to give her sister-in-law a piece of her mind, when Devon Anderson stepped in (that's the name I'm going to use for Blaine's dad).
"Patty, I love you and I'm so glad that you are so concerned about Blaine. But he's not broken. He doesn't need fixing. This is how he is and like it or not, it's how he will always be. And I think I can parent my child just fine." Devon said to Patty. She nodded. Then smiled to herself.
"Hey kids! Your cousin Blaine is home from school! Come to the dining room." She shouted to the house. Heather and Chad sulked over, while Sami, Jordan, and Aaron sprinted over. Michelle was carried over by Blaine's new uncle (he thinks his name might be Dave?).
"Hey homo." Chad towered over Blaine. Dave shot him a disapproving look.
"Chad, that isn't kind. Don't call him that." Dave said while trying to stop Michelle's screaming. Chad looked annoyed.
"What? It's true. He told the whole family 2 years ago at Thanksgiving. He should know that this stuff is coming to him. And you're aren't even my dad, you can't tell me what to do!" Chad yelled at the end. Dave looked extremely dejected and turned his full attention to Michelle, and left the room. Blaine made a mental note to talk to Dave later this week.
Heather looked up from her phone. She held up a picture to Blaine. It was an attractive blonde hair blue eyed boy hugging Heather. She must've dyed her hair recently because it was a shade or rose gold in the picture, while it was a dirty blonde today. "This is my boyfriend, Brandon. Do you have a boyfriend?" She asked in a judgmental tone. Blaine looked down at the hardwood floors.
"No, I don't." Blaine answered. He felt someone grab his phone. "Hey!" Blaine forgot that he had left his phone open while fake texting, trying to get away from Patty. Chad had grabbed his phone and started going through his texts.
"Who's Kurt then?" Chad teased. He started to read some of the texts. "You send good morning and good night texts? Wow, so does he! This is so gay. You know what Blaine? I think the impossible has been managed. This guy might be an even bigger f*g than you are!" Everyone stopped. Even Heather looked up from her phone.
Blaine didn't know what had come over him, but it did nevertheless. He kneed Chad where the sun don't shine, grabbed his phone and ran. Ignoring the yelling from downstairs, Blaine flew up to his room and locked the door. He stayed up there for hours as Chad banged on the door saying that he would kill Blaine for what he did. Blaine kept that door locked until he hear a hand timidly knock on the door. To his surprise, Heather and Sami were standing there when he opened the door. They both looked ashamed, an expression he had never seen on their faces before.
"Hey Blaine. Can we come in?" Heather asked. He nodded, and they made their way inside. "I'm so sorry for what Chad said. I-I don't know what else to say. And, I'm sorry for how I've treated you. For how we all treated you." Blaine thought this might be a joke, but then Heather started crying. Not exactly sure what to do, he pulled her into a hug. Sami joined in.
"I love you Blaine." Sami grinned. Then she ran off to terrorize her brothers. After Sami left, Heather faced Blaine.
"I need your help." Heather said. She grabbed her phone and showed Blaine a different picture. It was of this beautiful girl with coffee brown skin, bright gold eyes, and curly brown hair tied up in a bun. "Brandon isn't my boyfriend. This is my girlfriend, Charlotte. And I don't know what to do!" Blaine hugged her tighter. "And I can't tell anyone about her. Especially not my family." She cried some more. "Thank you. But why are you being so nice about this? I was so awful to you."
"Because I know what it's like trying to battle who you are on the inside." He said. She smiled at him.
"So is this Kurt kid actually your boyfriend?" She asked with a grin. He shook his head, no. Blaine could feel his face heat up. "Oh my god you like him!" Blaine's face got even redder. "You do!"
Blaine realized that yes, he did like Kurt. "Yes. I think I do." Heather started smiling like an idiot. Maybe, Blaine thought. Them staying here this week wouldn't be so bad after all.
