Depression can be circumstancial.
Clinical or chronic depression, though, isn't always circumstancial.
You can have the ideal life, family, job, house, whatever and still suffer from depression.

Nobody asks why it rains.
It just does.
We accept it and wait 'til it stops.
Until it stops, we adjust accordingly.
We may drive more cautiously.
We may dress warmer.
We carry around an umbrella.
We may have to reschedule events.

Rain:
It will come eventually.
It may come for a while.
It may come for an afternoon.
It may come for a week.
It may come as a storm.
It may come as a drizzle.
It may come as a hurricane.
It may come as a downpour.
It will go away.
It will come again.

Its just something that happens.

Depression can just... happen.
We adjust our schedules accordingly and wait til it finally stops.
Until then, our appetite might change, our temperament might change, our thought pattern might change, we approach things differently, we fight ourselves a lot, we are tired, we are confused, we are sad, we can be empty, we can be vacant and hollow, we can be neurotic, we can be impatient, we can be frustrated and irritable, we can lack motivation and feeling.

Depression:
It will come eventually.
It may come for a while.
It may come for an afternoon.
It may come for a week.
It may come as a storm.
It may come as a drizzle.
It may come as a hurricane.
It may come as a downpour.
It will go away.
It will come again.
