The road from here to AZ, for the most part, looks the same. You could be driving for hours on I-10 and the scenery wouldn't really change. It's not until you drive through a couple of landmarks along the way when you finally see evidence of your travels. Because driving for hours on a road that doesn't change could feel like we haven't moved at all.
The scenery is the same and that makes us feels like we haven't made progress. Even then, we still keep driving knowing that we will eventually make it to the state. Every now and then, we drive through cities showing us that we have been making progress.
Sometimes enduring a depressive episode, it feels like we are stuck in the same surroundings going no where. Nothing's changed no matter how much we try. But just like a road trip, just because the scenery hasn't changed doesn't mean you haven't been moving forward. You'll arrive at brief checkpoints that show you have indeed been making progress. For me, it was small things like where I looked as I walked. I didn't realized how I never looked up as I was walking until the moment I first did and felt a trickle of euphoria and delight. Wow... its been so long since I've seen you, I thought. And then, in due time, you'll reach your destination. There may not be any exciting views throughout the trip, but you got there.
