Elodie and Mary-Anne lay very still on the crunchy green grass in Mary-Anne's back garden.
"I saw Quinn and the others with Maya.
They must've forgiven her.""What did you expect, Elle?
Friends forgive each other.""I know, it's just... I don't understand how they can forgive her for what she did."
"Maybe she really is sorry for what she did?"
"She never said she was.
That's the thing, not only has she not given me a reason, but she's also not told me she actually regrets what she did."Mary-Anne sat up abruptly.
"Ask her then."Elodie followed suit, carefully placing a handful of grass back on the ground. "I shouldn't have to!"
Mary-Anne frowned.
"Who are you really punishing here?"Elodie feigned confusion, though she really knew what her best friend meant.
"I-I don't know wh-""-Elodie.
The last thing you said to your Dad was 'liar'. You meant it as a joke and he knew that!
So why has it been eating you up so much?"A lump formed in Elodie's throat, causing her to cough, her eyes looking at the grass.
"That's the last thing he ever heard me say."Her eyes welled up, and her next words came out as a faint sob.
"I should've told him I loved him..."Mary-Anne's face softened, and she wrapped her arms around Elodie. "Aww, babe. No one knows what the last words they say to something will be.
It's not your fault."Elodie sobbed, burying her face in the crook of Mary-Anne's arm.
"Shh", whispered Mary-Anne, gently stroking her hair.
"I know it's hard... but I think it's time to let go of this pain."_______________________________
Maya's headscarf was draped against the radiator.
A knock on the door caught Maya's attention.
She reached for the now damp scarf, putting it on her head.A stunned Maya almost gasped when she saw the person at the door.
"Elodie?
What are you doing here?""I was, uh, just in the area.
I thought I'd ask if you're going to the poetry event.
So... are you?"Maya nodded.
"Hopefully, yeah.
I've been working on some poems that I might share, actually.
Are you going?"Elodie shrugged.
"I planned on going but Mary-Anne can't come with me so... I'm not sure anymore."Maya nodded.
"Oh... I don't think you've ever missed one."Elodie laughed.
"True.
But, there's a first time for everything, I guess."Maya nodded.
"Yeah..."An uncomfortable silence settled, and Maya contemplated closing the door.
Call it a sudden act of bravery, or foolishness, but Maya decided to do something surprising."Actually, I... I wrote a poem for it that I'd like you to hear
If that's ok with you, of course!"Elodie's eyes widened.
"Oh!
I... wow, I um, yeah.
Yeah, ok.
I... I'll think about it."Maya nodded, a small sigh of relief escaping her lips.
"Cool."Elodie took a minute to study Maya's face, a pink tinge appearing on her face when she realised how long she had been staring.
"Um, I'm gonna get going now."Maya nodded.
"Bye."__________________________________
The next day, Silas watched as the school's cleaning staff entered the building. He had camped out all night after telling his Mum he was staying at a friend's.
He just couldn't be around her right now.
Maybe he could never be around her again.
As soon as the last cleaner arrived, Silas rushed into the building and made his way to Phillip's room.
His sole aim?Keeping Katie safe.
After a dramatically long attempt at opening the door, he finally managed it. Knowing he only had a few minutes before a cleaner walked past, the boy headed straight for a folder marked
'CLASSIFIED.'"Mr. Hastings, what are you doing in my office?"
______________
Uh oh, Silas has been caught! What will happen to him now?
Elodie's side of events will be explored in a special chapter. Is anyone warming to Mary-Anne?
