Bennett and the woman sat in silence for a long time. Finally, the woman cleared her throat.
"I know I wronged you."

Bennett scoffed.
"That's putting it lightly.
I lost so many friends. My Mum and Dad keep looking at me like I'm going to wake up one day and be the same boy I was before."

The woman nodded.
"I truly cared for you, Bennett.
But... I suppose I didn't care enough to leave the life of stability I had with my husband.
I should've done more to help you.
I am sorry."

And just like that, she had apologised. As much as Bennett hated to say it, there was genuine remorse in her tone.

Bennett shook his head.
"No. No, this isn't fair! You don't get redemption! You can't just leave me here in some strange world where I blame myself for not moving on."

"I am not saying that you should forgive me", said the woman.
"In fact, I am going to the police."

Bennett furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
"What?"

The woman nodded.
"I have been contemplating this for a while. My husband is facing a lengthy prison sentence and... well I just can't keep pretending anymore. He is a bad person. He simply will not change."

"I... I don't get it."

"I made several mistakes.
Terrible ones.
I need to pay for them now."

"So what?
You're gonna... hand yourself in?"

"Yes.
I will make the phone call.
You can listen if you'd like."

"Why'd you call me here, Beth?"

Beth sighed.
"You deserve to know why you were taken."

Silas smiled as he entered his house. His father promised to video call him today, and the boy was definitely looking forward to it.

His Mum frowned when she saw him. "You're late."

"I'm sorry, I had to do some school stuff with friends", he replied.
"Are you ok?"

"Your food's gone cold", she said, ignoring his question.
"Hurry up and eat it. I'm meeting a friend for coffee. I need you to do the dishes."

"Can I do it later? I'm gonna call Dad now."

"No. Do the dishes first."

"But Dad doesn't have a lot of ti-"

"-Silas Morale Hastings you will do the dishes!", shouted his Mum.

A stunned Silas simply stared at his Mum.

She took a deep breath.
"Good."

"Years ago, he did an experiment on two babies. He couldn't find the location of the baby girl, so he grew desperate to find the boy.
He needed to know if his experiment had worked. He... he saw you and believed that you were the child he did tests on."
