Chapter 5 - Scott's POV

I had tried to keep my promise to myself. The first real experience I had was with Ben. He was a brunette with olive toned skin, gorgeous eyes and a quiet way about him that gave me the confidence to approach him. It had ended up a complete disaster. He wasn't out yet either and we had been so afraid of someone finding out about us that we ended up hating the sneaking around and that translated into hating the need for each other. Anonymous relationships that were basically one-nighters were easier. I was always safe, "No glove, no love." Lived by it. But it didn't do my self-esteem any good. Ben decided he was a top about the same time I did too. I might switch for someone if I really loved them, but right now, nope.

Thinking all of these maudlin thoughts make me want comfort more than anything else in this world. If I surprise Mom and just hop on a plane now will that be awful of me? Nope, she always encourages me to visit, even when it's only a couple of days. I still can't believe it's been three years since I spent more than 3 nights home. Skype is great but you can't hug a computer screen, and it can't hug you back.

Hugs. I love them. I love wrapping my arms around someone and holding on tight. When I go home I'm usually the one being wrapped up, when was the last time I did it? I can't remember.

I couldn't stand it any longer. I called Janene, the Orchestra's secretary and told her I was taking some time off. Her reaction? "Great! You're beginning to look burnt out. Have a break and give us a call when you're coming back. We'll break in Sean while you're on leave." On leave. That sounds awesome. Yeah, time for a break. Maybe I'll write something? Thinking about Ben reminded me of Coby, guess I have a type after all. Coby... I wonder if he's still there. I wonder what he looks like now? I know I don't look the same.

I grabbed a suitcase and filled it. I packed toiletries and a bit of 'out for a nice night' attire, but mostly it was comfy things that I could wear and no one would really take a second glance at me stuff. I didn't want people to notice me and make a big deal of the time between visits, or the 'OMG You're Famous' crowds. I just wanted to be an ordinary guy. It's a good thing there aren't too many Classical Music aficionados at home.

I got on a plane, strapped in and called Mom. She sounded happy that I was coming home. I don't care if I have to sleep in the guest room, not my room tonight. I started to feel a weight lift. Maybe it's time for a few changes?

I got collected at the airport by Mom's Butler/Chauffeur Miles. He seemed like a nice guy. He hasn't been with Mom long so I don't really know him very well. He was very professional and didn't say much on the drive in from the airport. That was fine with me. I put my earphones in and listened to one of my playlists. When we got home I got enveloped in Mom's hugs and smothered in kisses. She was like "I haven't seen you in far too long Scotty. Have you lost weight? You look tired. Have you been eating well? Have you found a nice girl? What's going on with work?"

I had to remind her I wasn't leaving any time soon and we had a couple of weeks to catch up, instead of the usual quick chat before I have to go to rehearsal. "Oh, yes, are you sure you can take that much time off work Darling?"

I chuckled, "I'm not irreplaceable Mom. Anyway it gives Sean a chance to get some decent practice in."

"Your understudy right?" Mom queried.

"Yeah, he's been chomping at the bit for a chance at a larger venue. It'll give him some experience and maybe I can concentrate on the other side of things for a while."

"Movie music?"

"Writing. Mom, I'm a bit burnt out I guess. I haven't written anything good for a while now and I'm looking to relax and maybe get some inspiration from home again. Before I left for New York I was working on a piece that was kind of rattling around in my brain. I want to see if I can find it again."
