I was awake long before Adam was. I stayed curled up next to him for a while, wondering what he was probably going to have to say to me when he eventually woke up. I felt bad that he might potentially get in trouble for me being here... and that was the last thing I wanted, so I decided to sneak out of his bed and go talk with Ms. Maria. I wanted to explain before she even had the change to find out that I was there on her own. Though, something was telling me she already knew.
I quietly exited Adam's room, careful not to wake him up. He'd probably stop me from going to explain myself to his grandmother and I didn't want him to do that. In fact, after I did that I planned on leaving and wouldn't be bothering him anymore. I could manage avoiding him... even at school... and well, the Power Ranger thing... I'd figure it out.
I quietly crept down the hall, seeing Ms. Maria in the kitchen making herself something to eat. I nervously rounded the corner and she looked right at me. I folded my hands in front of me as I scratched at the cast on my right hand. I swallowed hard as I tried to think of the right words to keep Adam out of trouble.
"How do you like your eggs?" Ms. Maria asked, seeming to not even care that I was just randomly in her house.
"Um, scrambled..." I cleared my throat.
"Orange Juice or Apple Juice?" she moved around the kitchen.
"Apple." I muttered.
"How did you sleep?" she asked.
"Uh... about that." I nervously laughed.
"You and Adam looked very comfortable when I checked on him this morning." She didn't seem bothered by it because I could have sworn I heard a little giggle escape from her but she kept her composure.
"Don't be mad at him... please." I muttered, "I snuck into his room last night while he was sleeping – he had nothing to do with it."
"Okay." Was her response.
"I woke him up because I was just having a hard time about something and he was just being a good friend and..." I trailed off, losing the words in my head. "We didn't do anything other than just sleep..."
"Dear, let me stop you there. I trust Adam enough to know that he wouldn't do that right now... Besides, I know you're having a hard time about something and if Adam can get your mind off that for even a fraction of a second, then I'm okay with that – as long as it's appropriate." Ms. Maria told me.
Something was telling me that she knew more than I thought she did and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Adam had told her what he thought was going on with me...
"Adam told you, didn't he?" I asked.
"He did, yes. I know you probably don't want to talk about it, but when you're ready too... I'm here. Now, how do you like your toast? Grape or Jelly?" she asked, continuing to cook breakfast like we just didn't have that conversation at all.
"Grape." I told her.
"So, I see you're out of commission on our violin lessons for a while." She mentioned.
"Yeah, I guess I am. I had to go and break my hand..." I played off.
"Well, we can still have our lessons... We'll just find something else to do." She smiled as she set a plate down in front of me.
It wasn't long before Adam woke up and came investigating when he heard me and his grandmother laughing over breakfast. We had gotten on the subject of talking about funny stories, and she was telling me one about her and an old friend before they passed away. Adam didn't question anything as he made himself a plate of food and then sat down at the table with us.
