Emmeline tried her best to supress her excitement but she failed miserably. She burst into the dorm, ready to tell Angelina everything. She immediately sensed something was wrong when Angelina was perched on the end of her bed sporting a solomn look. The blonde flew to her side.
"What's up, Ang?" she pressed, urgency laced through her voice. Angelina said nothing but held up a note. It read:
Emmeline, you're annoying us and therefore we've helped ourselves to some of your belongings. That photo of you and Daisy is so cute! Your parents look just like you. Think of this as a revenge. Love, your new nemisis.
Emmeline's heart sank. She knew it was gone. It was one of the only photo she had of her, Daisy and her parents. It was quite literally her prized possession.
"What happened?"
Angelina shrugged. "I'm so sorry. I was out of the dorm the whole time, as were everyone else. The whole room has been ransacked."
Anger surged through Emmeline's body. She was trembling so violently the bed beneath her was shaking. "Veronica!"
Angelina's eyes gleamed with anxiety. She shared the same thought. Who else would want to hurt Emmeline this badly?
Emmeline rose to her feet and began pacing. "I knew she would seek revenge. This is low, even for her? Is anything of yours taken?"
"All of our bedding and curtains."
"And some change off Katie's bedside table," Alicia said, scanning the room for other missing items.
"But that really doesn't matter!" Bell added quickly.
With the excitement about her date and then rage, she hadn't noticed that their dorm was indeed stripped from furnishings. Emmeline swore.
"Get your nightrobes on, we're taking a trip to the Slytherin dorms."
"Em, I'm not too sure that's a good idea, we should go to a Professor. They might be able to get the stuff back," Angelina suggested, the other girls nodding.
"No, I'm fighting fire with fire. This ends now. Her reign is over."
"Let's go tell a Professor first, we can't do anything. I don't want you getting into trouble."
"I don't care!"
Emmeline charged out of her dorm, completely ignoring the fact that Fred and George were sat beside the roaring fire. Fred got to his feet, followed by his
twin."What's all the commotion?" asked Fred.
"We're going to the Slytherin common room," Emmeline spat, turning red in the face. A beefy vein was protruding out of her clammy forehead.
"But Gryffindors aren't allowed in the Slytherin common room," Fred said, surprised by the fluidity of her character.
"And when did you care about breaking the rules?" Emmeline barked.
"We're breaking rules!" cheered Fred. "Count us in."
"This isn't fun and games," Angelina warned. "We need to think about this logically." The dark skinned girl filled the boys in, whilst keeping Emmeline constricted by her grip so she wouldn't charge off to find Veronica. Fred was immediately enraged. To Emmeline's surprise, the Weasleys agreed with Angelina and wanted to go to a professor.
"No, get together your worst, most humilating prank you have!" demanded Emmeline.
Fred laced his fingers around hers. George and Angelina exchanged grins.
"Hold up, when did this happen?" quizzed Katie. Fred and Emmeline ignored her pry.
"Listen," Fred said softly. His fingers stroked Emmeline's hand. Goosebumps ignited across her body but she was too angry to notice them. "The professors might be able to get it back and they can punish Veronica properly so she can't do this again."
"She will have destroyed it. And she's taken my most valuble posession, there's nothing else left." Emmeline's rage was replaced with an insurmountable sadness that could only be controlled by an epsiode of sobbing. Fred embraced her and she swallowed up his scent and warmth. She felt safe here, really safe. Almost like he was her home.
"Not that this isn't cute but like can we speed things up a bit? We have no bedding and I want my beauty sleep," said Alicia.
"Right, okay, I'll stay here with Emmeline and you guys go find a professor so you can report everything that's missing and show them the note," instructed Fred.
Emmeline shook her head. "I want to go, I want to see them be punished." Fred was pleased Emmeline had excluded herself as the main distrupter of Veronica's demise and she had agreed that they should go to a professor.
"Stay here with me, Angelina can tell them everything."
Exhaustion suddenly washing over Emmeline, she surrended and agreed to stay with Fred. He told her to sit on the sofa, by the fire. He waved his wand and the spell encoruaged the flames to develop in size.
"Yeah, I think I'll stay here too," Alicia decided, flopping onto an armchair. "Katie remembers what got stolen from me."
"No I really think you should still come, safety in numbers and all that," said Angelina. She didn't want her to ruin this moment between Emmeline and Fred.
"Honestly, I'm really tired so I'll just stay here." She yawned and relaxed her head onto a crimson cushion. Angelina sighed and left the room, followed by the clan of angered Gryffindors.
Meanwhile, Fred had prepared Emmeline a hot chocolate emblazoned with a mountain of cream and marshmallows. Emmeline gratefully accepted, allowing the steam to kiss her face.
"Oh, go on then Fred, you've pulled my leg," Alicia said, rubbing her hands together. The smell of hot chocolate had perked her up a bit.
"What?" Fred was confused.
"The hot chocolate. I know I shouldn't, I am trying to keep in shape. Maybe dial down the amount of marshmallows?"
"Oh, right, yes." Fred awkwardly walked over to the table where the mugs stood and emptied the final sachet of Honeyduke's hot chocolate into a mug and heated it with a spell. He had clearly intended to prepare that one for himself and Emmeline was suppressing a giggle, desperately trying to disguise it by taking big gulps of the chocolate mixture. Reluctantly, he handed her the mug. His grip remained around the mug for longer than what was conventional. He didn't want to let go. Alicia snatched the mug impatiently and Fred resided next to Emmeline on the sofa.
"Oh yes, this is very nice," Alicia said, taking sips through pursed lips.
"Yes it is, thank you," smiled Emmeline. The kind act had brought a smile to her tear stained face.
"I mean, I wouldn't know how it tasted," mumbled Fred.
Within seconds, Alicia had devoured her drink and returned to lying down. Fred had looped his arm around Emmeline and she nestled up close to him. She was much calmer now and began confiding in Fred. There was no way Veronica would stop at this. How far would she take it? Would she put Daisy in danger? She pushed these thoughts to the back of her mind and focused on the present. Fred looked so adorable as he listened to every word she said, his face aglow from the fire. The duo's conversation soon became stationery, but they were enjoying each other's company. The only sound was Alicia's snores.
"Does she always snore this loud?" Fred grumbled and Emmeline nodded with a chuckle. "Why don't you get some sleep? I'll wake you when they get back." Emmeline nodded again, blinking through bleary eyes. It was relieving to let her eyes droop shut. Fred smiled when he soon heard her heavy breathing, signalling to him that she was asleep. She looked so peaceful. His arm was tingling from her being laid on it for so long, but there was no way he was going to move it and disturb Emmeline. He eased the tension by entangling his hand in her golden hair. To many people, Fred Weasley was regarded as poor, but right now he felt like the richest man in the world.
