The spring sun was buttering the windows of the library a soft golden colour. It was a few weeks after Veronica had been excluded from school and there seemed to be a mutual aroma of serenity amongst the castle. Without their apex predator, Vivienne and Velma felt lost at the place they had been in control of since their first year. The duo kept a low profile, Emmeline barely saw them anymore. A part of her did feel sorry for them; they were Veronica's puppets and they had no idea how to think for themselves without her direction. On the other hand, being a bystander to Veronica's bullying pegged them in the same rank as her. Though she no longer had to worry about the trio taunting her, it seemed Snape had decided to take their place. He was much stricter than usual, which was saying something as he already was the most loathed teacher at Hogwarts. He had decided that in the lesson she had that day that Emmeline wasn't listening (even though she was). As punishment, he had handed her a laborious quantity of homework. She could barely see Fred, who was sat across from her, over the mountain of yellowing parchment. He was currently stuffed onto an oak library chair, twidling a quill between his fingers. He wanted to spend time with Emmeline but not like this. She had been working non stop for what felt like years and was being very unresponsive. Fred decided he would get more cooperation from the thick coating of grease that hibernated firmly on Snape's black wire of hair. In attempt to capture her attention, he rose to his feet with a dramatic flair. She didn't look up and began nibbling the end of her quill in frustration.
"Emmeline, we are leaving," he announced, still on his feet.
"So if you add two pheonix feathers...no that can't be right..." she mumbled, furiously scribbling out her notes. Her mind was too captured in the prison that was Potions homework and it seemed like not even Fred could break her free.
"Erm, hello, Fred Weasley is speaking!" he said, slightly louder.
"Oh, sorry," she apologised, releasing a sigh that portrayed how stressed she was.
Fred, officially deciding he had had enough, picked her up. He slung her over his shoulder so there was very little chance of her escaping.
"Fred!" she squealed. "What the hell are you doing?"
"You are too stressed so we are stopping now."
"I need to get this done before my next lesson!" she hissed, squirming in his grip. "You can't just leave my work there, Fred I need to get my stuff!"
"Don't worry, I'll get one of my minions to get it."
Emmeline rolled her eyes, giving up trying to resist him. She couldn't believe that this was her boyfriend.
"Fred Weasley," snapped McGonagall. "Madame Pince just informed me that there seems to have been a kidnapping in the library."
Fred furrowed his brow. "Interesting. Maybe you should check on Harry. Things always seem to be going wrong where he's concerned. It certainly sounds like a pickle that rascal would get himself into."
"I'm talking about the student you seem to have on your person," barked the professor.
Fred mocked confusion. "Oh you mean Emmeline? Emmeline, meet Minnie, Minnie meet Emmeline."
"Weasley this is not the time to be joking around when you've kidnapped someone!"
"It's not a kidnapping if she wants to be here, is it?"
"She doesn't look like she wants to be here all the blood has rushed to her head. Are you okay, Emmeline?"
Emmeline nodded as Fred put her down. The tension that held McGonagall's shoulders dissipated.
"You can't go carrying students around the castle!"
"Why, do you think the professors are getting jealous?"
McGonagall pinched her forehead where a stress induced headache had formed. Suddenly, a low rumble encouraged McGonagall to remove her hand and seek the source of the noise. She turned around to see Seamus Finnigan, hair stood on end and face covered in soot, his cloak gently sizzling away.
"Why oh why did I decide to become a professor?" she muttered under her breath. Her eyes met with an embarrassed Seamus'. "Don't think I've forgotten about you, Weasley!" Fred had a funny feeling she would forget, due to the sheer state of Seamus. She most certainly had more pressing things to deal with. Fred chuckled to himself until he looked down at Emmeline and saw her eyes were dancing with anger.
"And what was that about? You can't just pick me up and carry me out because you're bored. Just because you don't care about your education doesn't mean the rest of us don't. Why are you looking at me like that?" Instinctively, she rubbed her face, fearing that she had gotten some ink on it or something.
"You're cute when you're angry."
Emmeline struggled to hold her threatening expression. From his comment, a smile had bloomed, igniting her face. "I need to go and get my stuff, Fred."
Fred grabbed a Gryffindor student. "Nigel, do me a favour and get Emmeline's work from the library?"
"I'm called Dennis," the boy responded, sheepish and intimidated.
"Yeah that's what I said, now chop chop I don't have all day."
Dennis scurried away towards the library.
"You're evil," Emmeline noted. She set off and Fred was happy to see she was walking away from the library. She was putting way too much pressure on herself.
"Some people call it genius." He shrugged, falling into stride with her. They spent the remainder of the day together, not a single recollection of the uncompleted Potions homework. Fred went to bed with a grin that hadn't left his face all day.
