Fred Weasley never expected Emmeline to be a girl he could love. Before she befriended Veronica, she was quiet and shy. Borderline invisible. He was the exact opposite The surprising factor wasn't fully that she was studious and shy; it was that he didn't expect to be with anyone. It had only ever been him and George against the world, focusing on pranks and how they could cause the most distruption at Hogwarts. Girls were never in the picture. That was until he really got to know Emmeline. Of course he had admired girls before, maybe even had crushes on them. But it had never gone any further than that. He never thought he would like being so tied down. He never saw himself as a person who could be in love. Truly and deeply in love. Life was full of surprises, he should know that by now.
Emmeline also didn't expect to fall in love Fred. He was witty and handsome and confident; everything she wasn't. She thought he would never like a girl like her and once she found out she did, she assumed those feelings had disappeared after she literally ruined her whole life trying to impress the apex predator of Hogwarts. Fred had just always been there. Throughout her identity crisis and emotional breakdowns, he was there like a rock for her to lean on. He didn't expect anything in return. Underneath the cocky demeanour and ambundance of pranks, the boy had a heart of gold. She was incredibly lucky to have him and sometimes didn't feel worthy. This always angered Fred. She was the only one for him and he did his very best to reassure her that. No one else made her feel like he did. The electricity that snaked across her arms, causing a chilling and addictive combination of goosebumps and raised hairs, from only his touch. The butterflies that soared through her stomach when he looked her in the eyes. He made her feel that she could never be sad again. When they were together, their hearts beat as one. It felt as though there was only them in the whole world. It was europhic.
Since there were only a few weeks until the final task, the couple didn't get to spend much time together as Emmeline was more focused on what it could entail. She still tried to prioritse him and her friends but between that and her increasing workload, she struggled to balance it all. Luckliy, rumour had it that Veronica had transferred to Beauxbatons so she didn't have to worry about her. According to the gossip, which was spreading around the castle like wildfire, Veronica and the Siegels had packed up their mansion and travelled to their holiday home in France. Under the surface of all she had to think about, it did bother Emmeline that Veronica's life always seemed to be perfect. No matter what she did, the consequences were far from punishment. Though the French school was participating in the Tournament, due to Veronica's exclusion she therefore wasn't allowed to stay at Hogwarts during the tournament like some students were.
Emmeline was currently studying in the Great Hall when Fred appeared, greeting her with a kiss on the cheek. He had a parcel tucked under his arm.
"Missed you," Emmeline mumbled, still concentrating on her work, as Fred sat next to her. He placed the package infront of her. "What's this?" Knowing her boyfriend all to well, she eyed it suspiciously, expecting something to jump out at her or something. When it came to the Weasley twins, it was always important to expect the unexpected.
"It's from mum," Fred answered, picking up a disgarded Daily Prophet. He began leafing through it, eager to discover what lies Skeeter had woven this time. He scoffed when he found she was still fabricating a Harry and Hermione love story.
"Why?" asked Emmeline. She lifted the lid and was instantly hit with the smell of a combination of freshly baked goods.
Fred shrugged, helping himself to a doughnut even though the box specifically said it was for Emmeline. "Think she wanted to wish you good luck or something."
"You told her about me? About us?" she asked, wiping a crumb of golden pastry from Fred's mouth. Shame bubbled away in her stomach when she thought about how she behaved at the Weasley's. She was still very much attempting to impress Veronica and physically shuddered in attempt to dismember the cringe she felt. She hoped Mrs Weasley didn't disapprove of her dating her son.
"Hey, I was saving that for later!" Fred said, refering to the crumb. He nodded. "Of course I told her about you."
"And? What does she think?" Emmeline demanded quickly, not even letting the fact that he told his mum about her sink in. That must mean their relationship was serious and he was proud to show her off.
"Well, she doesn't usually send the entirety of our kitchen to people she hates so I assume that means you're in her good books."
Relief washed over Emmeline. Fred was right, wasn't he? She still couldn't help but worry that she was just trying to keep the peace and she didn't actually like that Emmeline and Fred were official. Maybe she just felt like she had to make an effort with Emmeline?
"Oh and she really wants you and Daisy to come stay with us over the summer. If you want to that is. Obviously don't feel like you have to."
Emmeline could think of nothing better than spending the summer at the Burrow. Her heart literally leapt at the thought of it and she couldn't accept the invitation quick enough. She watched him devour a cupcake as though he hadn't eaten in years. And right at that moment she wanted nothing more than for it to just be the two of them. She longed to have him, all of him. Little did she know, she was a few weeks away from her death and she would go to her grave without him.
