"I would like to address the three problems we are facing now", says Axel as we cross the bridge, after our meeting with Alexei.
"Three?", I inquire. Axel shows three fingers to me and replies, "Yes. First, the Gemlock. We don't know where their hideout is. It can be under the bridge, it can be in a cave. Heck! It can even be under Mr. Grinverr's cottage. Not to forget, their elites. The way Alexei stressed about them, it is certain that they will pose an issue rather than the other 50 members. But what makes me most anxious is the mysterious girl he had spoken about. Her eyes... They are just...."
"Dead? Yeah, even I saw that", I finish. Axel looks at me with his flickering eyes and says, "I wouldn't say 'dead'. They were just ominous. Even if we haven't encountered her, I am already getting bad vibes from her". He then folds his next finger and says, "Second, it's the bridge".
"What about it?" I ask.
"From tomorrow, we will always be near it, with only occasional visits to the village. So, it is safe to assume that if we don't take the fight to them, they will bring the fight to the bridge", says Axel.
"Hmm. That might be a problem. Mr. Grinverr had said that the completed sections are indestructible, so they might not cause us any problems if it comes to the destruction of the bridge by the Gemlock. But I believe the actual problem might be keeping the workers safe at the same time".
"You are absolutely right about that, Sandra. The bridge width, from what I can see, might be about 40 feet, just enough to keep two steam engines side by side. So, if we have to stay on guard between the workers and the attackers, we have to use our positions strategically. Let's check that bridge out before retiring for the day. It is an unfortunate thing that everyone in the guild is on quests, otherwise we could have asked for some reinforcements", says Axel.
"They can't help it. It is the busiest time of the year. The Winter Solstice festival is approaching and everyone is completing their quests so that they won't have any job to pull them away at that time", I say as we reach the other side. Axel folds the last finger and says, "And the last one, are the Warriors".
"What about them?" I ask as we enter the alley in order to avoid detection.
"The Warriors of Gritery are corrupt. Well, some are. So there might be a chance of us getting arrested 'unofficially'", Axel says doing quotes in the air.
"All we have to do is find officers who are willing to help us", I say, to which Axel replies, "I just wish Wendell was here. She alone would have been enough to set them on a straight path".
"Why don't we send a message to the Warriors outside?" I ask.
"Did you forget that every letter gets intercepted? Heck! In order to contact us, Mr. Grinverr had to go to Jinoti. But if I had to rely on someone, then it would be Uncle Leo. If he sends someone to investigate Professor Martin, we might have a chance of being backed up by reinforcements", says Axel. We reach the bridge under construction and continue to walk down the completed sections of it. My partner looks at both sides and says, "The bridge's width is nearly 50 feet". Then he looks down the bridge, blows out a low whistle and says, "I must say, Drazeel and Drakarys really did a number on this place". I look down. The canyon has sharp rocks edging out. The water looks torrential, but from what I had heard, waters in these areas are calmer compared to others. We make our way to the section which is under construction. Some tools are set aside and there are a few building materials here and there.
Axel then points at what was supposed to be the halfway point of the completed bridge. He says, "That is the place where we will stand guard. That position covers almost everything".
