"What do you mean by 'ready'? Does that mean that my training is over?", I ask excited.
"No! I didn't mean that. Don't you remember the conversation we had when I came to your room first time after you woke up?" he asks. As if I can forget that day. But the way he is indicating that conversation, it is clear that he means something specific. I rack my brain for details.
"On the second thought, I think you are not ready", he says, which ends up with me jumping out of my seat and grabbing his collar.
"Oh Please! Don't do that! I am ready!" I say shaking him vigorously. I try to remember what we talked about. As much as I remember, we talked about my legs, his magic and also we talked about that demon.
"Cassie! Stop shaking me!" Axel says calmly. I quickly let go of his collar and sit down back in my chair. He continues saying, "Don't you remember asking me why my eyes turn red?"
"Since we are talking about your eyes, I do remember asking about them. But you said that it was a side effect, so I didn't give it a second thought".
Axel gives a long sigh and says, "Sorry, its not a side effect. I lied to you about it".
"Why?" I ask, shocked by this revelation.
He looks down on the floor and says,"I was scared. I thought that if I told you the truth, you would hate me".
"I told you that it doesn't matter anymore. You are a precious friend of mine. I can never hate you. And by the way, who all know about this?"
"Gramps, Adrian, Lucia, Sophie and now you". Besides me, I notice that the people he mentioned just now belong to the Duncan family.
"Then, what is it? Why does your eyes turn red?" I ask. He looks up and stays quiet, as if he is carefully selecting his words, not in order to hide but to make it easier to understand.
"The moment my eyes turn red, it means that the demon who is in me, has taken over my body", he states as a matter of fact.
"What!?"
"Yes. It's true. The moment that demon entered my body, it's been trying to take over my body. Now, the very second I am speaking, it's trying to take over me".
"But your eyes turn red momentarily. It doesn't even last a second".
"It is because I am resisting it. It takes a lot, but I am resisting it".
This is lot to take in. The Axel I admire is actually internally fighting a demon all this time. He seemed so cheerful.
"The only time I am vulnerable is while I am sleeping".
"But you don't seem to be controlled and you sleep peacefully whenever you take a nap".
"Oh! It is because of this". He removes the cylindrical box from his pocket and places it on table. "This drug was created by Melody. I don't know what she had used to prepare this, but it works well. It acts as a suppressant and as a sleeping pill. In other words, whenever I sleep, the suppressant agent paralyzes my muscles rendering it useless and sleeping agent helps me to sleep without nightmares. But there is a problem".
"And that is?"
"For some reason, my body tends to wear off medicine effects very quickly. It is always been like that since I was a kid. If a normal human takes this, he would sleep for 18 hours non-stop. But in my case, it wears off after 5 hours, give and take. But even with all this precautions, the demon does have some control over my body".
