This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race - Fall Out Boy

---------------------------------------------

Luke Hemmings was currently late for his lecture (what's new?) and was swearing to himself under his breath as he gripped the pole of the tube to support himself as the carriage whizzed through the tunnels. He wished that he was a wizard or some shit like that so he could make the train go faster.

Sometimes Luke questioned why he even bothered with the tube. He was studying Maths and Economics at The London School of Economics, living in a place called Passfield Hall which were halls provided by the university for students to live in.

By the time he walked to his nearest tube station (Euston) to get the tube for one stop to King's Cross and then switch from the Victoria line to the Picadilly line and travel two stops to Holborn, it seemed completely pointless, all that unnecessary effort to save him like two minutes.

Despite always being late Luke was really enjoying uni and his degree and he particularly enjoyed the uni life, I mean what eighteen year old boy wouldn't want to live independently, go out almost every night spending all your money getting drunk and then only able to afford to eat beans on toast for the rest of the month?? So much fun.

Luke hadn't quite got the idea of budgeting yet, despite studying an economics degree. In which your supposed to be good with numbers.

Now that he was in his fourth month of university and freshers week (more like freshers month) had long since gone, Luke wasn't out partying so much and was actually studying, you know, like you're actually supposed to. If you're going to pay £9000 a year for this shit you should probably try and at least pass . Though somehow he was still late everyday without fail.

Luke finally strutted into the lecture theatre a good twenty minutes late. Honestly this was pretty good going for Luke, his lecturer barely batted an eyelid as he slid into his usual seat at the back of the room next to a quiet girl named Tamsyn.

Luke always ended up sitting next to her, mainly because she always sat at the back of the lecture hall by herself, he figured that she preferred to sit by herself, but she didn't seem to mind his presence and therefore it was just easier to slip into the theatre and into the spare seat next to her so as not to disturb the other students. She also always took really good notes and made sure that Luke was always caught up on the bits he missed at the beginning of every lecture and seminar.

Tamsyn wasn't very talkative, but after four months of their weird companionship Luke knew a little bit about her, for example he knew for a fact that she wasn't very talkative, he was really good at paying attention obviously.

On a serious note, they both lived in the same halls, on the same floor even, although by some unwritten rule they never socialised outside of the university wall unless to say "Hi" in passing. They didn't even walk back to their flats together regardless of the fact that they both went home at the same time and usually ended up walking just ahead/behind of the other.

Luke did know that Tamsyn had a good taste in music. She was always wearing shirts of bands that Luke liked, which gave them something other than their degree to talk about, when they actually talked.

When Luke slipped into his usual seat next to Tamsyn that morning their conversation went exactly the same as it did every other time they talked, i.e:

"Hi"

"Hi"

"What are we doing today? Nice shirt by the way, Fall Out Boy are great."

"Thank you, their new album is so good! We've just started on Fiscal Policy, here, these are my notes."

"I know right, I love Novocaine. Thanks for the notes. Or should I say Thnks Fr Th Nts. Wow I'm sorry I'm such a twat."

This was generally how the conversation they had every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings went although they were usually minus Luke's shitty humour. He wasn't sure why they didn't talk more, but honestly the arrangement suited them both, although Luke did feel like a dick sometimes for using Tamsyn for her notes.

Luke strolled out of his lecture approximately two and a half hours later and began the twenty minute walk back to his halls. He quite often walked home as he was in no rush, unless it was raining, which was like fifty percent of the time because it's England for fucks sake, and so he would take the bus or tube instead. He was also reluctant to spend another £2.30 on the tube when it could be put to much better use, and being the sensible, mature adult Luke was, it would most definitely not be spent on cheap shitty beer.

It was around one in the afternoon by the time Luke had got back to his flat, after following Tamsyn for twenty minutes. He felt like a complete stalker as she walked ahead of him, headphones in. He was guessing that she was listening to the new Fall Out Boy album, 'cause like, who wasn't?

He deposited his shit in his room before heading to the kitchen, he was hungry after having skipped breakfast in his rush to leave earlier this morning. Luke made himself some lunch and leaned against the counter, wondering where the hell the rest of his flat mates were.

Luke shared his flat with seven others. Four girls; Amy, Grace, Lauren and Chloe, and three guys; Ashton, Michael and Calum. He got on really well with all of them, which was a relief, and within the four months they'd all been living together they had become very close.

The flat they shared wasn't huge, but it was clean and pretty decent considering that eight eighteen and nineteen year old's lived there. They had a room with an en-suite each, but had to share the kitchen.

Luke didn't mind the small living space, however he was forever complaining about his shower being too small, you couldn't blame him though, it wasn't his fault that his shoulders were so broad that he could barely fit in it.

Just as Luke was tidying up the mess he made making his lunch Grace, Ashton and Calum trudged into the kitchen.

"Alright mate?" Ashton spoke.

"Yeah, you?" Luke responded. Ashton just nodded his head in response, before setting about making himself some food.

"We were thinking of going out tonight, you in?" Calum asked. Luke contemplated it for a few seconds, he didn't have another lecture until Monday morning - it was currently Wednesday and nights out for Luke were relatively cheap as he was such a lightweight.

"I'm in" He grinned at Calum, who hi-fived Grace.

"This is going to be great" Calum grinned back.

Later that night (technically it was early the next morning), Luke was completely off his face as the group of eight rowdily made their way back to their flat. Their arms were all linked together as they stumbled down the street laughing and belting the lyrics to the songs that had been playing at the club they had previously been at.

It was in that moment, in his not-so-sober state, that Luke couldn't help but appreciate how great and uncomplicated his life was.

Just you wait Luke. Just you wait.

Hi, thanks so much for reading this! sorry about how short it is but it's still kind of introducing the characters and setting etc. updates will probably still be fairly slow as i'm still figuring out the plot, but so far i've got about a quarter of the chapters planned, so i'm aiming for an update once a week (mondays possibly) if not it will be every two weeks. thanks again for reading this, I hope you like it. (feedback would be greatly appreciated)
