sometimes it all gets a little too much,
but you gotta realize that soon the fog will clear up
A Little Too Much - Shawn Mendes
————————————————————
Luke had no idea what to do with himself. He had returned to his room over an hour ago and could not stand still. He was slowly wearing a path into his carpet as he paced back and forth. Every time he stopped moving the images came back to haunt him.
He was still a mess, covered in dried blood. He swore he could smell Marie's light perfume on himself but he was just hoping it was imagination being overactive.
Unable to bring himself to take a shower Luke continued with his repetitive movements, occasionally swearing under his breath and pulling at his hair when he felt the memories of the night surfacing. He was worried that if he took a shower he would be left alone with his thoughts and that terrified him.
By the time the sun rose Luke was erratic. He had kept himself awake the whole night despite how sleep deprived he was. He had tried everything, from listening to his music with his headphones in on full volume, reading a book, to consuming an unhealthy amount of energy drinks that he had stashed under his bed.
At eight in the morning Luke used his phone to check the news. Sure enough one of the top stories was of what happened the night before. He couldn't bring himself to read the article, locking it after he had found what he was looking for. The name 'Marie Goldsmith' jumped out of the page at him and swam in front of his eyes for minutes after he had exited the article.
Luke was sure that by now Tamsyn knew that her best friend was dead. There was police cars outside their building. He wasn't sure what time they had arrived but he was sure that it was within the last hour.
He unlocked his phone again, checking social media sites. It had barely been ten minutes before he had to put his phone down. His hands were shaking after reading the nasty comments people had made about Spider-Man on twitter. He already blamed himself but seeing it from complete strangers made it feel more real somehow. He couldn't bear to think what Tamsyn thought of him.
The chime and vibration combination of his phone brought Luke out of his trance-like state. He snatched it from his desk and had to rub his eyes a few times to be able to focus in on the bright message that lit up his screen.
Michael: Have you heard about Marie????
Luke stared at the message on his home screen, he didn't know what to reply to that and so didn't unlock it, he had read receipts turned on so he waited a while until he had thought of what to say.
Luke: Yeah I did, it's horrible news. I really need to talk to you, it's urgent and I need you to not hate me please.
Letting out a shaky breath Luke placed his phone on his bed, awaiting Michael's reply. It was about time that his best friend knew the truth. He had never felt this alone. The only person who knew anything was Tamsyn, and there was no way Luke could bring himself to talk to her in the current situation.
