The smell of the hospital always nauseated me. I hated everything about hospitals.
The dull and lifeless colors of the rooms combined with the dead eyes of the people walking through the corridors in a rush.

Doctors giving these fake sympathetic smiles before they announce bad news. I chuckled. I remember the night my parents died and I had to go the hospital. I don't remember what exactly happened. I only remember the feeling when I found out Elena was alive.
It was like the whole way through the hospital I was holding something heavy and then I was set free.
I loved Elena, despite feeling a bit of jealousy towards her. I would do anything to make sure she was safe.

I looked around the waiting room we were in and thought this is not a place for Elizabeth Forbes.
Caroline's mother, much like Caroline herself was a force of nature. An extremely strong woman. Compassionate, loving, she would do anything to help her town.

Yet here she was slowly dying of cancer. None of this was fair.
I sighed and looked over to Kai.

He was sitting on the chair, waiting for Caroline to talk to the receptionist.
Stephan was also there. He had promised Caroline he would stay with her mother when she couldn't be there and he was the one who called her.

His eyes were fixed on Kai. Like he was ready to attack him at any given time.

Caroline walked over to us and nodded her head anxiously.
"Only three of us can go there. I'll go with Kai and-"
"I'll come!" I jumped from my seat a little too quickly and looked around me.

Caroline smiled at me.
"Thank you Jenn." She quietly said.

I smiled back and looked at Kai.

He stared back at me for a few seconds and then motioned to Caroline to show us the way.

Caroline's mother was laying on the bed, eyes closed. She looked tired and weak. It was very odd to see her like that. I glanced at Caroline.
She stroked her mother's hair and smiled sadly at her, trying to suppress her tears.

Kai seemed unfazed by the sad situation and simply stood there waiting for Caroline's approval to start.
She looked up from her mother to him and gave him a nod.

Kai gently took a hold of Liz's neck and her arm. He closed his eyes and concentrated.
His mouth was slightly open, eyes flattering subtly.

After a few seconds he opened his eyes again.
"All done." He slowly removed his hands.

Caroline looked at her mother hopefully.
"Mom?" She spoke softly.

Elizabeth blinked a few times and opened her eyes.

"How are you feeling? " Caroline asked.

Liz smiled and stroked her daughter's hand.
"I am actually feeling better. "

Caroline's eyes immediately lightened up. And she quickly wiped away some tears that had formed.
She let out a huge a breath and rested her forehead on her mother's. Evidently relieved that at least vampire blood was out of her system.

I stood there silently watching them and reminiscing memories with my mother. I used to be really close with my mother in comparison to the rest of my family and since my parents died I felt like I had no one to talk to.
Jeremy was my twin brother but after our parents died it seemed that we grew apart. As for Elena, she always felt like she needed to be a parent for me and not a sister. But I didn't need her to be my mother...
I wanted a sister.

I shook my head. I was happy for Caroline. She and her mother would at least have more time together and it was the least the universe could offer to them.
I turned to Kai and he was already staring at me.

"Creepy." I mouthed to him.

He gave me a half smile and placed a hand on my back to guide me out of the room in order to give some privacy to Caroline and her mother.
I felt my skin burning on the place his hand had touched me.

I bit my lip. I didn't know why Kai had that effect on me but I was determined to ignore it.

As we turned right on the corridor we run into Jo.

Oh shit.

Jo didn't know Kai was back.

Her eyes widened and she stood there in shock, her stare fixed on him.
Kai on the other hand didn't seem even e bit impacted. He just stared back at Jo and slowly waved at her.

"Hi sister." He said casually.

She pointed at Kai. "What is he doing here Jennifer? " She didn't look at me when she spoke. Like if she took her eyes away from Kai something bad would happen.

"Jo please, calm down-" I tried to speak but Kai jumped in.

"I was just helping some friends sis." He smiled at Jo,taking a step closer at her.

I instinctively grabbed his shoulder to stop him. He didn't react.

"You don't have friends Kai. I don't know what you told them but-" Jo's voice was slightly shaking.

"You made sure of that right! You and dad dearest!" His voice was raised, veins popping up on his neck.

I remembered again of Kai's past. That he was dangerous.

He pushed my hand away from his shoulder and took a few more steps closer to Jo.

"After you murdered our siblings." Jo stopped and stood her ground. Facing Kai.

He laughed. Laughed like a maniac at her response and run a hand through his hair.

"You think I didn't know that you had planned this weeks before I did that? You think I just snapped one night?" His chest was rising and falling rapidly.

"Kai... that's enough." I dared to speak, instantly regretting it.

He turned his head at me and gave me the coldest look. Like he wouldn't mind snapping my neck right here and there. I froze unable to move.

I heard footsteps and saw Elena and Stefan.
Both ready to attack.

"What the hell happened? We could hear you all the way through the waiting room?" Stephan stood between Kai and Jo.

There was silence. Kai still had his eyes on Jo as he spoke.
"The deal is off. I am gonna merge with Jo. You have a week."

He stormed out of the corridor.

I let out the breath I was holding all this time. Everything went to shit.
