Chapter 28

Loved you at your worst but that didn't matter

3rd Pov.

Jennifer stood still as a statue staring at the man in front of her who resembled a lot the boy she had fallen in love with.
He looked a lot like the Kai she had met, at first just crushed on but eventually fallen in love with.
But older. The man who stood in front of her, in his bloody clothes and empty stare looked much older, any boyish look had vanished from his features.
Everything looked more sharp and maybe it was because of his beard which had grown a lot but Jennifer, who knew Kai was permanently stuck at his 22 year old self, thought he looked 10 years older.

Samantha and Nate stood there too but Jennifer couldn't think about anything else besides Kai in front of her. She felt like she was staring at death himself. And he looked quite terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

Jennifer who didn't know how she could make it out alive or how she could help Nate and Samantha escape took a step back, out of fear.

"It's adorable that you think you can fight me Jenn. You shouldn't have come here. Honestly, wouldn't it have been better if you simply followed me." He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly, casually strolling through the room.

"I will. Just let them go... Please." She forced herself to keep her voice as calm as possible.

"No Jenn, we won't let that happen." Said Samantha sternly, even though she was clearly unsure of how she or Nate could stop Kai.

"Jennifer whatever is going on" Nate spoke for the first time looking from Jennifer to Kai trying to figure out the situation "you don't need to be afraid. We are here now."

The loud music and laughter from downstairs were becoming louder and for a split second Jennifer imagined how her life could have been if there was no Kai or any other supernatural being threatening their lives every other month. She looked at Kai who looked very amused by Nate and Samantha and their act of bravery.
She didn't have time to think about what to do or say because Elena, Stephan and Damon walked in but stopped immediately when they spotted Kai.

"This is enough." Damon growled bearing his fangs at Kai who still had his back turned at them.

He didn't speak.
Before Damon could attack him, he had risen his hand just a bit and the room filled with a buzzing noise making everyone including Jennifer shutter in an agonizing pain.

"This has stopped being fun a while ago. Jennifer, baby, will you come with me willingly or do I have to kill everyone in this room?" He asked, slightly angry.

"Fine! Fine!" Jennifer screamed and just like that the pain stopped.

Elena quickly recoiled and stood to her feet. "Jennifer no! There's no way we-"

But Jennifer didn't let her finish.
"There's nothing you can do. Or I could do to stop this." It was true. Kai was stronger than all of them and Jennifer didn't like the idea of letting her friends fight for her.

"Jennifer Elena is right... I am not sure what exactly is going on or.... what exactly he is but-" Samantha who had lost all the color from her voice tried to reason to.

But Jennifer cut her too.
"Sam you are right." Jennifer said quietly and for a moment Samantha thought she had come to her senses. "You don't know and you don't understand. I am sorry for putting all of you in danger." She said looking around the room.
"Everything is my fault" She continued her voice barely audible "and since Kai is also my mistake. I am not going to let anyone else get hurt."

Even though she wanted nothing else but to run as far away from him as she could, Jennifer forced herself to walk towards Kai.
Every fight, every argument she had with her friends about this man flashed before her. Her mind seemed to be in the mood to mock her, in a way telling her how stupid she was to trust him and love him. He was always going to be the same twisted boy she met and somehow had fallen for. And now, she thought, she was going to finally pay for that mistake.

Kai grinned satisfied and took his hand in his, making her feel even more trapped than before.

And trapped she was.
