The Travel To New Land

After Regal returned from the trip, he brought back a bunch of meats and pelts, handed them over to Darwin before coming to join us on the meeting. I was a bit surprised when I heard Regal make his speech and bring up good ideas. I always saw him as a, well, all brawn but he actually seems to have intelligence as well.

After the discussion, he suggested having tribesmen who are more handy with weapons go with the dogs on the ground to clear out any predators and find a desired path to travel on before sending the group who were meant to build the fencing. It wasn't a terrible idea, I'll give him credit for that. Elias liked Regal's input and the way he was so outspoken, so much so that he asked Regal to stay behind so they can discuss other elements in the tribe. Regal is quickly becoming a well respected member.

After my part of the meeting, I got the sled dogs fed and ready for the travel as well as Zulu and New dog. We still haven't gotten a new musher so the sled was just commanded by anyone randomly picked. Its been a long day of work.

I'm resting on my bed with Zulu and New Dog as I write this part of the story. I went to go check to see how Kathy was doing after her experience and she seemed to be doing better already. She didn't seem too happy about playing with the direwolves, especially since they are no longer small puppies but she has been, otherwise, doing well. The giant ground sloth was not a species I was familiar with so I will have to study the lifestyle of wild ones to ensure that Kathy will have a desirable life with us.

Well well, Regal has made himself comfy here. This morning, Elias named him secondary leader of the tribe and lead guard. I thought he'd be a bit more boastful about it but he took the title with respect and just thanked Elias for entrusting him with such responsibility. Maybe those were just Regal's bad days. He seems to be actually mature and takes his job seriously.
-
Okay, I officially take every negative thing I have ever said about Regal back, he is a great warrior and I'm more than happy to have him part of the tribe.

Why the sudden praise? well, while we were taking the builders to new land, we were attacked by a clowder of sabertooths. Zulu and New Dog took on one while the tribesmen went for the others. One of them tried taking on a big toothed cat that was way too big and it ended up taking him down, before the animal could kill the tribesman, Regal stabbed the animal in the hunches, turning its attention onto him. Regal allowed the tribesman to get away from danger as he took on the animal himself. He seemed to wait for the right moment, holding the spear in his hand before the animal went charging at him. When the big toothed cat pounced onto him, Regal stabbed his spear into its throat before kicking the animal off him. Regal was left with a few scratch marks on his chest but he instantly showed more concern for the others than himself. Heck, he even checked on Zulu and New Dog for me while I tended to the injured men. He wasn't a bad guy at all.

Everyone is relaxing at the moment, it's a late night, everyone's just settling down after the attack. I sat up a camp fire for them while Regal went hunting stag for dinner. He is keeping watch since it was late and the fence wasn't even halfway complete, leaving us vulnerable. Regal stayed leaned against a rock, spear in hand as he kept watch.

Zulu and New Dog are by my side chewing the bones of the stag they had just eaten. While the men are now setting the tents. Time for sleep.
