Sakusa waits as the grey-haired male behind the counter scolds someone through the phone.
"Cover?! I covered for you many times already!" he growls, shaking his head.
Sakusa stops listening to the argument, and looks away to look at the cafe's interior. The cafe gives off a cozy vibe, and the aroma of coffee supports the 'cozy' setting of the cafe.
The grey-haired slams the phone down, startling Sakusa and some customers. "I'm sorry. A co-worker is being an asshole," the grey-haired explains, bowing slightly to Sakusa.
Sakusa blinks. "It's fine," he mutters, his voice even softer due to the mask covering half of his face.
"You look oddly familiar... have we met before?" the grey-haired asks, squinting his eyes and tilting his head slightly to look at Sakusa.
"Not possible. I don't even know you," Sakusa replies, shaking his head. The grey-haired shrugs. "Must've mistaken you with someone," he says. "Anyway, what would you-"
The bell at the entrance of the cafe chimes, and the grey-haired scowls. Sakusa follows his gaze towards the entrance.
"Get your ass in here," the grey-haired demands. "You're late. Again."
The tall figure that has just entered the cafe covers his face in embarrassment as he scurries to the back of the cafe, towards the brown door next to the washrooms with a notice saying, "Staff only."
The grey-haired exhales and shakes his head. "Sorry. Your order?" he asks. "Hot coffee. Just sugar. Take-out," Sakusa replies.
As the grey-haired taps his order in, the tall figure from earlier stumbles out, frantically tying his black apron around his white long-sleeved blouse. He must still be embarrassed since he's trying not to look anyone.
"That'd be 506 Yen," the grey-haired says. Sakusa fumbles for cash from his wallet and hands the exact amount to the grey-haired.
"Please step aside to wait for my idiot brother to make your drink," the grey-haired says, motioning to the empty space overlooking the ingredients for drinks.
So they're brothers?
Sakusa moves to the empty space, watching the grey-haired's brother. He makes out his blonde hair that is styled the same way as his brother's. The blonde quickly rolls his sleeves up to his elbow before making his way to the sink to wash his hands.
"Oi," the grey-haired says, pasting a sticker of Sakusa's order onto a styrofoam cup. The blonde dries his hands before scowling at his brother and snatching the cup away from his hands.
Sakusa draws nearer, interested in how the blonde will make his coffee. The blonde turns, jumping in shock at Sakusa's intent stare. Sakusa realizes not only are they brothers, but they are twins too.
The blonde has the same hazel brown eyes as the grey-haired's, and their hairstyles are similar. But the only difference is that their hair colour. They seem to have the same personality.
And Sakusa's going to be proved wrong soon.
As the blonde dispenses coffee beans into a glass, he smiles slightly at Sakusa, who is watching closely.
"Have I seen you before?" he asks. Silence. Sakusa blinks, before realising he has to reply. "No?" he says uncertainly.
Even his grey-haired twin thought he knew him. What is going on?
"Oh. Must have mistaken you as someone else. Is this your first time here?" the blonde continues. Sakusa raises his brows. The barista certainly knows how to make a conversation going.
"Yeah," he replies.
"Does the first timer have a name?"
"Last time I checked; yeah."
The blonde's lips tug upward even more. "You're a grumpy one, aren't you?" he asks, pouring hot water into the glass before stirring.
"I guess," Sakusa replies, shrugging.
"Well, since you don't want to tell me your name, you will be known as Squidward for the time being," the blonde says.
Sakusa frowns. "Squidward? How am I a Squidward?"
The blonde lets out a laugh. "You see! The frowning, the mood swings. Everything about you! And I presume you're slightly socially awkward."
"How would you know?"
"Am I wrong though?"
Sakusa doesn't answer because the blonde is right. He doesn't socialise well, and he can't casually start up a conversation like the blonde barista.
"I'll take that as a 'Gosh, you're right! How are you so smart?!'," the blonde jokes, pouring the hot coffee into the styrofoam cup.
"You're not," Sakusa says, causing the blonde to let out an offended gasp as he places a plastic lid onto the cup. "Squidward! The actual audacity!" he says.
The blonde hands the coffee to Sakusa and gives him a bright smile. "Farewell, my Squidward. I really hope we see each other again."
As Sakusa takes a sip of the coffee and exits the cafe, the picture of the blonde's smile remains in his head.
"All I wanted was a cup of coffee, not someone's smile stuck in my head."
