He'd trained hard for this day, dieted until he felt like he was going to die, and the day has finally arrived. Today is the day of Way's basketball competition.
Way was always exceptionally good at sports. At nearly every school he transferred to, he would become the star player. Only he rarely got the chance to show his true potential, because he changed schools so frequently.
Back when Way first entered this school, he didn't join any sports. He didn't think he would be able to stay for long.
But Kim manages to change his mind. Though, he didn't do much. Just put the recruitment form on Way's desk and told him to start spending time doing things he likes.
"Nobody is so free to play with you all day." Kim just had to add.
"Are you joining as well? " Way asks expectantly. It would definitely be nice to join with a friend.
"No. I have to train for my Olympiads."
"Awww. It's okay if you're not good, P'Way can teach you. Not everyone is good at sports." Way is sad that they can't play together, but he understands that Kim is already busy.
"And definitely not everyone is smart." Kim shoots back.
"Ah, how about this?" Way suggests.
"If you can score four out of five goals, then I'll join the club."
"Do whatever you want."
"But don't you want to see who's better?"
Kim is tempted. Not because he wants to prove himself, he already knows that Way is much better than him in terms of athletics. But because he thinks Way would really benefit from having something fun to do while in school.
"Fine. But make it three out of five goals."
Kim is not at all confident in his basketball skills. He's played a bit here and there, but it was always just for fun and never serious training.
At the school's basketball court, Kim shoots the first ball and it goes into the hoop.
He sighs in audible relief. Maybe he wouldn't be as bad as he thought.
The second ball enters the hoop. Kim lets out a quiet "Yes!" under his breath.
Way secretly cheers Kim on.
But his luck seem to have run out as the third, fourth and fifth ball miss their target.
Kim is dejected, but also angry at himself for taking up the bet. He throws the basketball at Way and walks away with his head down.
Way sneakily smiles at the ball in his hands and chases after Kim.
"Hey! I said I'll teach you!" Way shouts as he catches up to Kim, putting his arm around the other in a headlock.
He ruffles Kim's hair endearingly.
"Awwww, were you sad?"
"Why would I be sad? It's your loss."
That day, Way signs up anyway.
