You show up at Tony's doorstep after 10 years of being gone, after faking your own death. (17)

It was never meant to go this way. You had left being a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent when you joined the Avengers, as a scientist, not a field agent. While they were out on missions, you stayed in the lab researching projects, updating suits, the whole shebang. As such, you became a target for anyone wanting to get close to the Avengers; seemingly weak and with vast information. So far, each plan had been thwarted, either by underestimation of you (you were a field agent when you worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. and kept up training with Nat and Clint) or by the team getting there in time to save you. This time, though, the team was deep in Hydra territory and you were left alone.

You had been found by Agent Coulson, the man who was like a father to you—the man who you thought was dead. You were recruited by Clint Barton as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and trained by him and Natasha Romanoff, a girl who was your age and quickly became your best friend once she was rescued (a bit after you). You were introduced to Clint's wife with her and, upon their births, became Auntie Y/n to two kids, Cooper and Lila. You were adopted by Coulson a little while after you came to SHIELD, while you were still a minor; you were closer to him than Nat or Clint, although both were close to him, and the former wasn't adopted for that reason and also because she was older than a minor when recruited. You met Tony Stark for the first time when you went with Nat and Fury to help him at the diner with the palladium poisoning, before you and your father had to babysit him. Your dad only introduced him to the boxes and then promptly left for New Mexico with Clint; you, on the other hand, were stuck nannying a man almost twice your age and helping him create a new element. You were in your early twenties when you met him, not knowing how much this man would change your life.

You helped out at the Stark Expo, helped fight the Chitauri with the Avengers, and then asked to transfer to the Initiative team. With that transfer, you had requested to be solely a scientist, not able to stomach fighting after seeing your dad die on the helicarrier with Loki. You only fought when absolutely necessary to defend yourself or one of your friends. No missions, no nothing.

You and Tony started dating eventually after your move to the Tower, and although you weren't there in Malibu you quickly figured out that the attack was personal and that Killian was the Mandarin. Pepper, his assistant and close friend, was used as a test subject for the EXTREMIS that you helped rescue. One of the only times you broke your strict no-mission rule was then, to save your boyfriend and his (and to an extent your) friend.

With your kidnapping by Hydra came panic. Your memories of your capture are a blur—vague snippets of voices, questions, waterboarding, beating, the like. They couldn't wipe your memory to get you to comply, though, or they'd lose the information they were trying so hard to forget.

What you do remember is being gently shaken awake by a man you watched die—Phil Coulson, or as you know him better, Dad. He carried you out to where his team waited, having taken down the guards there. You were in and out of consciousness before slowly working your way up to field agent level, helping Fitzsimmons in their lab on the side. You were excited to see Melinda May, who had been and continued to be a mother figure to you (and you were mad that she and Phil weren't dating, you shipped them hard), and quickly became friends with the other Bus kids. Except Ward, something always felt off with him.

Throughout the continuing tumult of the next couple of years, Jemma, Leo, and Skye/Daisy became your best friends and siblings. Sure, you ended up being close to Bobbi, Mack, Yo-yo, and the others, but not as close as you were with your sisters and brother-in-law.

When the Sokovia Accords and Civil War happened, you begged to be able to stop them. Before, you had tried to be allowed to go see your boyfriend and the team, who were a family to you almost as much as your SHIELD team, but it was always denied. This time, despite the difference in circumstances, there was no change in the verdict, just like when Ultron happened. You forced yourself into your work, trying to forget the pain in your heart.

Then came the Snap. Your father, gone. Mack, gone. Fitz, gone. Daisy, your best friend and essentially your sister, gone. Alya, Jemma, Yo-yo, May, Daniel, still there. And you? You were one of those left.

Yo-yo took her boyfriend's place as Director after he was dusted. You were hesitant to broach the issue of wether or not to ask to see your old family, the Avengers. You knew Tony was alive from the news reports when he came back, but that was about it. Worry filled you as you wondered whether or not the other five were still there, too.

After a year and a half, in 2019, Elena stepped down from the position, handing it off to you and going back to being the most successful SHIELD agent. It actually worked much better than the original arrangement, and you surprisingly enjoyed being Director—even if there were a couple downfalls to it.

The biggest upside, though, is that you're finally able to see your old family. After five years, you can check up on your old team, your old best friends, your old boyfriend. God, you hope Tony's moved on, although part of you hopes he hasn't. You've seen the news, though; he and Pepper are to be married.

And so it is, that after five years, you show up at the compound.

Third Person POV:

Today is the day, the fifth anniversary of Y/n's death. Tony is celebrating it in his usual style: getting drunk and trashing the lab. Adding to his misery is the fact that it's been a year and a half since Peter was dusted, a year and a half since Pepper broke up with him and broke off the engagement. She's still Stark Industries' CEO, though, even if she and the majority shareholder aren't on speaking terms.

Tony sits on the floor of the lab, having stopped work completely after he got drunk enough. He leans against the wall, eyes closed as he drinks the whiskey straight from the bottle.

A beeping sound alerts him to the doors opening and someone walking in. He doesn't open his eyes as a shadow falls over him.

"Alright, come on," Rhodey's familiar voice grunts as he forces his friend to stand. Tony doesn't respond, moving to take another swig. "Let's go upstairs."

The billionaire doesn't move. Rhodey tries to take the alcohol away, but Tony is quick to remedy that. His friend tries again. "Look, there's more whiskey upstairs and some bourbon if you want. Now, will you come?"

Tony knows better than to fall for it, knowing despite his severely intoxicated state that Rhodey won't actually give him the drinks. The Air Force colonel sighs, switching to a different tactic.

"F.R.I.D.A.Y., please have Steve come down here."

A ding lets him know that the task has been completed. "Captain Rogers is on his way, sir," the Irish voice informs. Soon enough, the Iced Americano is downstairs, sighing and shaking his head in disappointment as he takes in the state of the lab and his friend.

"Tony..." his voice is pained as he takes in the mess. Steve picks up
