A/n: based off "Congratulations" from Ham4Ham
Sorry that this one is so short! Oh, and most of it is from Nat's POV

Did I write this in like twenty five minutes right after getting up when I'm sleep deprived? Yes, yes I did.

—————

Your POV:
You stare at the newspaper in front of you. Captain America Shares Sordid Affair, the headline reads. Snapping your paper down, you move to your room, crying.

Nat, who is on a week-long visit, walks in and notices you there. "Hey, are you okay?" She asks, rushing forward.

You nod, almost unable to breath with the weight of  what your husband has done. Shame fills you. What did I do? Was I not good enough? Did I push him away? Did I drive him to this?

That's when your friend—who you consider to be more of a sister than anything else—notices the newspaper on the table. She stares at you with new eyes, empathetic and understanding. "He never was good enough for you, (y/n)."

"B- but what if it's the other way around? What did I do to make him want to do this?"

Nat crosses her arms over her chest, muttering a few choice words in Russian, before reaching out and smoothing your hair back. "I promise you, it's not. You were the best wife anyone could ever hope for, he was just too blind to see it."

You nod silently, unconvinced but at least buoyed slightly. Nat gives you a hug, places her phone on the table and orders you to call her if you need anything, and leaves, closing the door quietly behind her. You lock it behind her and move back to the bed, where you spend the rest of your day going through tissues.

Nat's POV:
I shut the door behind me, knowing that what (y/n) needs right now is some space. I hope that she'll call me if she needs anything, but knowing her, she probably won't—so I'm depending on F.R.I.D.A.Y. to update me.

I move to the living room, where Steve sits, reading the paper nonchalantly as news plays in the background. My blood boils as I curl my fingers into fist.

"Steve." My efforts to keep my voice normal are thankfully successful.

He looks up with a smile, closing the paper and turning off the TV. "Nat."

I sat, making sure to be on the other side of the room, and turned the TV back on. "Congratulations," I said sarcastically, picking a magazine and pretending to read it.

Congratulations

"What do you mean?"

You have invented a new kind of stupid

I close the magazine, leaning forward. "You have invented a new kind of stupid." He rolls his eyes. "A 'damage you can never undo' kind of stupid. An 'open all the cages in the zoo!' kind of stupid. 'Truly, you didn't think this through?' kind of stupid.

A 'damage you can never undo' kind of stupid

Steve leans back with a sigh, knowing what I was talking about. "Look, Nat, I had to tell them about it. The papers were accusing me of being hydra because they had somehow figured out that I was going to secret meetings. We can't have another Accords, can't have another civil war."

An 'open all the cages in the zoo' kind of stupid.

My voice is deathly calm. "Let's review. You took a rumor, a few—maybe two people—knew and you refuted it by sharing an affair of which no one has accused you. I begged you to take a break, you refused to!"

Truly, you didn't think this through? Kind of stupid

Steve began to speak but I cut him off before a single syllable could leave his damn mouth.

Let's review

"So scared of what your enemies might do to you—you're the only enemy you ever seem to lose to! Do you know why Tony could do what he wanted? He doesn't dignify schoolyard taunts with a response! So yeah, congratulations."

You took a rumor a few, maybe two, people knew and refuted it

I stand and punch him in the face before moving to the doorway, about to leave. "You've redefined your legacy; congratulations."

By sharing an affair of which no one has accused you

Steve finally regains his voice. "It was an act of political sacrifice!"

I begged you to take a break, you refused to

My jaw drops open in disbelief. Sacrifice? The audacity. I slowly move forward, taking every ounce of control left in me to not kill him on the spot.

So scared of what your enemies might do to you

"Sacrifice?" My quiet, deadly tone causes Steve to shrink back. "Sacrifice?!" My voice grows stronger as I speak. "I languished in a loveless marriage to Bruce in India, living only to talk to you. I look back at you, at our lives, our missions and think 'God, what did it get us?'"

You're the only enemy you ever seem to lose to

"But that doesn't wipe the tears or the years away, but I'm back in the city and I'm here to stay." I slowly move forward as I talk, leaning over and whispering in Steve's ear. "And you know what I'm here to do?"

You know why Jefferson can do what he wants? He doesn't dignify schoolyard taunts with a response!

He smiles slightly, reaching out to take my hand. I move it out of reach, slapping him instead and turning to leave. "I'm not here for you."

So yeah, congratulations

"Huh?"

You've redefined your legacy, congratulations

I glance back at him. Idiot. "I know (y/n) like I know my own mind; you will never find anyone as trusting or as kind. And a million years ago, she said to me, 'this ones mine.' So I stood by."

All Steve could do was stare as my voice crescendoed in volume. "I love my sister more than anything in this life. I will chose her happiness over mine, every time. (Y/n)." My voice dropped fondly as I said her name, turning to Steve and punctuating every word with a step. "Is the best thing in our life. So never lose sight of the fact that you have been blessed with the best wife."

Steve shrinks, getting smaller and smaller as I get closer, tapping his chest. "Congratulations." I turn, my voice carrying as I walk out of the room. "For the rest of your life. Every sacrifice you make is for my sister; give her the best life."

As I reach the doorway, I notice the shield in the corner. He doesn't deserve this. I grab it and turn to him with a malicious wink. "Congratulations."

And with that, I leave, moving to go check on my 'sister'.
