We Were Kind Before, We Can Be Kind Once More

"So...winter formal is coming up. What's everyone wearing?" Vera asked. "I'm wearing sweatpants."

"What about the word formal do you not understand?" Angus scoffed. I laughed, eating my cheap school grilled cheese and daydreaming.

"Cat? Whatcha wearing?" Ebony asked. I shrugged and said, "Maybe a dress my mom bought me. I'm not sure."

"We should go dance shopping." Grayson suggested. I nodded and said, "I may not be able to go. There's been some rough stuff going on in my family lately." Which was partly a lie. I was just scared of what would happen. The last time I went shopping with someone was the day of the crash, and I didn't want something like that to happen again.

"Cat? Is everything okay?" Angus asked. I nodded reluctantly and kept eating my grilled cheese.

"Are you sure?" Vera asked.

"Oh, it's just getting used to a new school and stuff like that. No biggie." I said, lying right through my teeth.

It was more than just the new school stuff. I was terrified my dad was going to escape from jail again. I was terrified about which member of my family would end up in the hospital next. Or if there would be another car crash, though Elle's assured me multiple times that it was very unlikely to happen again.

It was "unlikely" the first time. No one expected it to happen. But it did. And I had a sinking feeling that my theory was correct, that my dad hit Jessica's car on purpose to get revenge. All along, Elle and Jess were at the top of his list.

"Catlynn, are you sure you're okay?" Angus asked, snapping me back to reality.

"Oh yeah, I'm fine. Just...daydreaming." I said.

Suddenly, my stomach cramped up. I grabbed my phone and ran out of the cafeteria, waving to my friends. I wanted to go home, I needed to go home.

I ran to the bathroom, then sat on the toilet and pulled out my phone. I dialed Elle's number and waited for her to pick up.

"M-Mommy?" I said into the phone.

"Sunshine? What's wrong?" Elle asked.

"I don't feel well. Can I go home? Please?" I asked, crying.

"Hey look, there's a whiny little baby in the bathroom." I heard a girl say. Just my luck. Another Violet Gardner.

"Oh, Sunshine, of course you can. I'll be there to pick you up in 20 minutes. Love you." Elle said. Then she hung up.

I stood up and walked out of the stall. That girl that was calling me a "baby" was back, but I didn't get a good look at her face.

"Oh my God." she said. She was on the phone. "Girl, you won't believe this. You know that girl Catlynn who got me expelled? Yeah, she's at my school now."

Violet Gardner. Violet was here.

Violet hung up and faced me.

"Since when did you go to charter school? This is for smart kids only." Violet said.

"Since last week." I said softly. "Please, take this opportunity to not bother me."

That was a mistake.

"Are you kidding me, Catlynn? You got me expelled! Of course I'm gonna bother you." Violet said.

"I had a pretty good reason for getting you expelled, Violet. You ruined my life." I said, which was a little harsh. But it was the truth. "And I'm getting picked up from school, so can we kindly end this conversation so I can go home? Please and thank you."

"Fine, but Catlynn? This isn't over." Violet said. I rolled my eyes and left, but on the inside, I was near to bursting into tears. I thought switching schools meant all the Violet crap would be over, but nope. It was just beginning.

Why did all this bad stuff have to happen to me? Why was I cursed?

I sighed, getting lost in my thoughts, and headed down to the front office. Elle was there and she hugged me.

"We're all signed out and ready to go, Sunshine. You got everything?" Elle asked. I nodded. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and I turned around. It was Violet.

"So. Elle. Your daughter's here. Great." Violet said sarcastically, with some anger rising in her voice. I snuggled further into Elle's arms, feeling scared. I didn't know what to do. Violet was here, and she was going to ruin my new school for me. I was just starting to enjoy it, and now this happened.

"Yes, Cat's here now. And I respectfully request that you leave her alone for once." Elle said. She knelt down next to me and whispered, "Please tell me she doesn't do band here..."

"I haven't seen her in band class yet. Maybe she'll switch into it, which I hope she doesn't." I whispered back. "I finally met a nice flute player, and now the meanest flute player in New York is at my school."

"Listen, she got me expelled." Violet said.

"More like you got her expelled for no reason!" Elle snapped. Elle rarely snaps. She must be furious at this girl. Which frankly, I was too. I just was amazing at hiding how angry I get with Violet sometimes. Or I was just too anxious to show it.

"Please, ma'am, you signed her out of school, please leave the building." the secretary said to Elle. Elle sighed and picked me up.

"Aww, is Catlynn getting carried out by her mommy?" Violet asked, giggling. She then turned around and strutted down the hallway. Badly. Elle started cracking up.

"She's like a wannabe Heather Chandler." Elle whispered. I tried hard to stifle my giggles, but it was hard. Elle carried me out to her car and put me down in the front seat.

"Do you think Violet's gonna bother me like she did last year?" I asked, truly scared for the answer.

"Let's hope not. Don't worry, Jessica will email the principal tonight." Elle said.

"That's her job now. Sending complaint emails on my behalf." I laughed. Elle laughed too as we pulled into the apartment. I was so caught up with all the Violet drama that I didn't notice that my tummy had gotten worse.

Elle carried me into the apartment and put me down on the couch, my head on Jessica's lap.

"Hey, Sunshine! What's up?" Jessica asked.

"One, my stomach hurts. Two, I had a horrible day. Three, Violet Gardner goes to my school now. So I'm doomed." I said. Jessica gasped and said, "No...not Violet."

"She started bothering me from the second she saw my face." I said.

"Complaint email?" Jessica asked, holding up her laptop. I laughed and nodded, then Jessica turned on the TV and started typing away.

But I couldn't help but think, would Violet hurt me even more than she already has?

AN: So Violet's back. I literally just got the idea 5 minutes before writing this chapter. And Merry Christmas, if you celebrate it! And thanks to Ari_XOXO13  for the whole strutting idea. Hope you enjoyed! Catch ya later!
