I Might Be Beautiful

"Bye Sunshine! I'll be back in about two hours!" Elle said, slamming the door behind her.

I sighed, slumping on the couch. I pulled out my phone and started playing a game. My long auburn hair fell behind me, and I pulled it up.

That was it. I started crying. No one was home to stop me. I ran to the bathroom with a pair of scissors and some hair ties.

I stood in the mirror and I put my hair into two pigtails.

"Perfect." I said, slipping the scissors in the pigtail and cutting.

Snip. A long piece of auburn hair fell on the ground next to me.

"Goodbye dead Elle hair." I said to myself, looking at my short hair. I started laughing, and said, "Yes! Yes! I did it!" I cut the other side and flushed the hair down the toilet so Elle wouldn't find it.

I got a bright idea. I ran to my bedroom and pulled out the blue hair dye I kept under my bed. "Here we go." I said, pouring some hair dye on my hand and putting it in my hair.

"Now let it sit." I said, sitting on the toilet watching YouTube for 40 long minutes.

_____________

I got out of the shower after rinsing off my newly dyed hair. I dried it with a towel then looked in the mirror.

It looked amazing.

It was a short, light blue bob, with some of the left side shaved off. I laughed, and said, "Yes! I set myself apart! Finally!"

My phone vibrated. I picked it up, and almost dropped it when I read the text.

Barrett: Heard you're home alone. Elle sent me to check on you. Be there in five.

"CRAP!" I yelled, running around my room, trying to find something to cover up my hair. I found Jessica's beanie on the couch and put it on, covering my hair.

"Cat? It's Barrett." I heard from behind the door.

"Crap. Gotta face the punishment." I said, yanking off the beanie and putting it back where I found it and opening the door.

"Hi..." I said.

"Woah! Cool hair!" Barrett said. "I can't believe Elle let you get that done!"

"She...didn't." I said. "Don't tell her, she has no clue."

Barrett grinned and said, "Awesome."

"Barrett. She's going to kill me if she finds out." I said.

"She won't Cat, it'll be okay. If she's mad, I'll take the fall." Barrett said. I started crying and said, "I had to...I was so insecure about myself that I just chopped it all off."

Barrett hugged me and said, "It'll be okay, Cat. It's okay."

The door opened and Barrett let go of me.

"HIDE ME!" I cried, grabbing Jessica's beanie and running to my room. Elle and Jessica walked in and Jessica sat down on the couch. I slammed the door of my room.

"Hi Elle." I heard Barrett say sheepishly.

"Hey! Thanks for checking in on her." I heard Elle say. "Where's your kid?" Jessica asked.

"Sunshine?" Elle asked. I stuck my head out of the door and said, "Hi Elle..."

"That's where my beanie went!" Jessica said. "It looks good on you, Cat!" I smiled, and Elle said, "Take it off."

I reluctantly took it off, shook out my hair, and handed the beanie to Jess. "I'm so sorry..." I said.

"It's okay, Sunshine. C'mere." Elle said, opening her arms for a hug. I fell into her and said, "Are you mad?"

"No, Cat, I'm not mad." Elle said. I let go of her and said, "You look mad." I smiled sadly at Barrett.

"Do I? Oh, Cat, I don't mean to." Elle said.

"I'm sorry I did it...I had a mental breakdown..." I said.

"Oh, baby girl, don't be sorry. You did nothing wrong. I'm happy you're channeling your emotions into something creative and artistic. Can I tell you something?" Elle said.

"Sure..." I said.

"Your hair, Cat, it looks amazing." Elle said.

"I'm so sorry Momma. I'm sorry Barrett. I had a breakdown and started crying because my insecurities were taking over and just cut it off in the mirror." I said, starting to cry. I never call Elle "Momma," unless I'm really scared or sad.

Elle hugged me and started rubbing my back. "It's okay, Cat, oh Sunshine, it's okay...shh, it's okay."

"I'm so sorry guys...I know you loved me the way I was but it was getting so bad..." I said, sobbing.

"We love Cat. We don't care if your hair is auburn or blonde or blue." Elle said, ruffling my hair.

"I get it if you guys hate me..." I said to my family.

"We do not hate you for your hair color." Jessica said. "Not at all. I think the blue hair looks great!

"You guys told me to not dye it..." I said.

"I get you wanted to stand out." Elle said, and I nodded.

"The hair looks awesome, though." Barrett said.

"I have something else to show you." I said, pushing back my hair and showed my family my newly pierced ears.

"When did you get those done?" Elle asked.

"Ryan took me." I said.

"But...you're terrified of needles!" Jessica said.

"I got this done before one of my hospital trips." I said. "Ryan took me right when I found out to prepare for the needle, plus he knew I wanted it done."

"You look so grown-up." Jessica said, and I blushed.

"Well, um, Cat, you wanna do something fun before you go to bed?" Barrett asked.

"Dance party?" I asked.

"Always." Jessica said, holding out her hand.
