"Why are we here?" Barrett said. "This is embarrassing. We're the oldest people here."
"It's for Cat. Plus, dodgeball is fun." Evan said, and Barrett stuck her tongue out at him.
I was at the trampoline park with my siblings. I had just gotten over Ethan's death, it was hard but I managed it. And now it was time for some fun.
"CAT!" I heard, and Red and Axel were standing there.
"Hey guys! What are you doing here?" I asked.
"Just came to have some fun. Question, how did your sisters ever agree to this?" Red said. I laughed, and said, "Evan convinced Barrett and Alice to come. You guys wanna join us? We're having a friendly game of dodgeball." I said.
"Are you sure you don't want some sibling bonding time?" Red said. I said, "I'm going out for sushi with these guys after this anyways. Jess has a doctor's appointment today so no one's home right now." I said. Red nodded and said, "You're challenging me to a game of dodgeball against Evan Todd?"
"Yes. Don't tell Astrid. She'll kill you." I said, and Red laughed.
"What are we waiting for? Let's go!" Alice said.
_________
"Darn it, Evan!" I yelled as Evan hurled a dodgeball at me.
"Keep in mind, there are 3 middle schoolers here who all take gym class. We know how to play dodgeball. And I won once against Austin Cook." Red said.
"Who's Austin Cook?" I asked, failing to throw a dodgeball at Barrett.
"Captain of the basketball team. Is 6'6", no joke. No one ever sees him because he's never in school. He either skips school, or is suspended." Red said. "Yeah, I was in his gym class in fifth grade and got him out in dodgeball. I may or may not have gotten detention because I gave him a concussion."
"YOU GAVE A GUY A CONCUSSION?" Axel and I said at the same time.
"What?" Red said. "Sue me." I was on a team with Red, Axel, and Alice. Evan, Jon, and Barrett were on the other team.
"Now I'm scared." Barrett said.
"You should be." Red said, hurling a dodgeball at Barrett, hitting her right in the arm. "Yes! Red did it again!"
"Referring to yourself in the third person is very weird." I said, throwing a dodgeball with little effort.
"Cat! You're better than this!" Alice said.
"I hate you so much right now." I said, and Alice started jumping around on the trampoline like a child. "Whee!" she said, doing a horrible backflip.
"Focus..." I said, annoyed.
Evan and Alice were jumping around while me and Jon were throwing dodgeballs at each other.
"Oh my God..." Barrett said as Evan got hit with a dodgeball.
"That's what you get when you jump around like a toddler!" I said. Barrett screamed when she got knocked over.
"WE WON!" Alice said, high-fiving me.
"Shoot." Evan said. "Sushi it is then."
"Bye, Red. Bye Axel." I said.
"Bye, Kit." Red said, and Axel waved.
_________
"I know this is usually a girl's thing, but I love this." Evan said, swirling a piece of sushi around in soy sauce.
"Watch out, that's super salty." I said, rubbing my eyes.
"Tired?" Alice asked, and I nodded. "I want to go home." I said.
"Aww. We'll be done in around 15 minutes. I know it's late." Evan said, and I nodded.
"What time do you usually go to bed?" Barrett asked.
"Elle makes me go to bed at 9. But I have trouble sleeping, so I stay up until midnight usually, 1AM at the latest." I said.
"And what time do you wake up?" Alice asked.
"6:30-7. I don't sleep." I said, laughing.
"Cat. You need sleep."
"I get 6 hours of sleep a night usually." I said. "Is that not enough?"
"Okay. You're usually up at 3AM because of a nightmare and you never get back to sleep after that. Go to bed earlier." Evan said.
"I'll try." I said.
"Good girl." Alice said, ruffling my hair.
"Elle doesn't know I stay up late." I said.
"Well, don't stay up late anymore. I have an idea. If you can't sleep, call one of us." Evan said. I nodded, and Barrett paid the check and we took a walk around Times Square.
"Hey, how's school been?" Barrett asked.
"Great." I said, squeezing Evan's hand. "I'm going to be in the school geography bee, that's in two weeks. Do you guys mind coming over and helping me practice? I've been studying flashcards and a handbook I found on Amazon for the past month."
"Of course, Sunshine." Alice said.
"What is a geography bee?" Jon asked.
"It's basically like a spelling bee. But people ask questions instead of asking you to spell." I said. "I was nominated for it. Not everyone tests into it. It's 3 people per grade per school. Violet got one point lower than me so she's in the bee."
"VIOLET GARDNER. IS IN THE BEE?" Evan screamed.
"Shush!" Barrett said, and I nodded.
"Violet won the bee last year." I said.
"Yeah, well Catlynn McLemore's going to win the bee this year." Evan said.
"Really?" I said.
"Really. We're going to beat Violet Gardner." Alice said. "Listen, you have 8 adult family members who all love you."
"I guess we're doing the bee!" I said.
"Right on!" Jon said, and we all laughed and headed back to the apartment.
AN: So...Cat's going to be in a geography bee! I've always wanted to be in a geography bee, but I'm too old now. (It's for 4th-8th graders.) Anyway, hope you enjoyed! Catch ya later!
