"So. Cat." I heard from behind me as I was walking the hallways at school. To my absolute horror, Violet Gardner was standing there.
"Violet, what do you want?" I said, which was a mistake.
"I want you to get out of this school and get out of New York. Your mommy doesn't love you anyways." Violet said. "And don't think I didn't hear about your sister dying. Sorry for your loss. She ain't sorry that she left you." Violet loudly cackled.
"Alice...isn't dead." I said. Here we go again.
"Ha. You're so funny, Cat." Violet said. "Now that your so-called 'auntie's' out of the hospital and your 'sister's' dead, why don't you just run away and never come back. Then see how much your mommy really loves you."
"Alice isn't dead! And you think everything with Jessica and the crash is over? No! She's still on crutches and she still has to go to the doctors at least once every two weeks!" I yelled. "And didn't you want to start over? Oh wait, I see what you did! You waited until I was at my most vulnerable! Violet Gardner, I want you to think long and hard about what you're saying right now."
"I'm saying that it seems too good to be true. Your mom isn't Elle McLemore. You're making all this crap up for attention. You know you're a loser, Catlynn. You just needed a boost to move up on the social scale. It's not gonna work." Violet said.
"You don't know what I've been through, Violet. I've been abused since birth. It took me 12 years to find a stable home with a loving family. I've been bullied and teased since birth, and that hasn't ended. I thought that living with Elle would give me my hope back, but then the crash happened and I was right back to square one." I said.
I would normally never stand up to Violet. I was too insecure. But my family passed on their power to me.
"Stop lying." Violet said.
"I'M NOT LYING!" I yelled between tears. Violet started laughing manically and said, "You gonna cry, Catlynn? Cry like the pathetic little baby you are? Go ahead, go run to the bathroom and call your mommy."
That broke me. I ran to the bathroom and pulled out my phone. Jess had a doctor's appointment, so I couldn't call her or Elle. I pulled up my contacts and clicked on Evan Todd.
"Sunshine? Aren't you supposed to be in class?" Evan said once he picked up.
"Yeah. I am. But Violet ruined it." I said.
"Oh my God. What did she do this time?" Evan asked.
"I don't want to talk about it." I said.
"Talk about what?" I heard, and Violet was standing over me. Violet yanked my phone out of my hands and hung up on Evan. "Here. Your brother hung up."
"No, he didn't. I'm not stupid. Give me back my phone." I said. Violet dropped my phone in my hands and laughed, running out of the bathroom.
I redialed Evan and he said, "What was that for?"
"Sorry. Violet took my phone and hung up on you. Can I go home?" I said.
"Sunshine, Elle and Jess aren't home. I could take you home and stay with you if you want." Evan said. I said, "That would be great."
"See you in 10 minutes, Sunshine. Hang in there." Evan said, and then he hung up.
_________
"Do you want to talk about what happened with Violet today?" Evan asked. I sighed, and said, "Yeah."
"Tell me. I want to hear it." Evan said.
"So, she confronted me in the hallway and started teasing me. She told me that Alice died and I was just in denial. And she told me to get over the crash. I told her basically my entire life story and she called me 'a pathetic little baby.' So I started crying and ran to the bathroom, and that's when I called you. She walked into the bathroom and took my phone, hung up on you, then started teasing me more. She told me to just run away from home because Elle wouldn't care, that she doesn't love me." I said, crying.
"Listen to me, Sunshine. Don't you dare run away from home. We would all be worried sick, because we all love you. And it's healthy to be scared. The crash was scary for all of us. And Alice is alive and getting better. And you could never be a disappointment or a burden, always remember that. I love you more than anything else in the world, Sunshine. You're my baby sister, my little Sunshine girl. Don't ever change. I love you exactly how you are, Sunshine." Evan said. He hugged me tightly and kissed my head. "And about Violet..."
"You're gonna say she's right, aren't you? That Elle's gonna kick me out?" I asked. I knew that wasn't true, but deep down inside me, I believed it.
"No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I wanted to say that I'm proud of you. Violet's been bothering you since August, that's almost three months now. And you had the courage to stand up for yourself, and that's what I love about you." Evan said. "Don't ever think that Elle's gonna kick you out. She loves you more than life itself. And do you want to know something else?"
"What?" I asked.
"When I saw you as JoJo, I thought the character reminded me of someone. And then I realized. You. You are JoJo. That smart, imaginative little girl who doesn't care what people think. The little girl who gets excited over the littlest things. The little girl who has been through more trauma and fear than most adults, yet still has a smile, a glimmer of hope in her eyes." Evan said.
I smiled and hugged Evan. "Thanks for being there." I said.
"You're welcome, Sunshine. I'm always here for you, I always have your back." Evan said. "I'm always going to be here, baby sis."
"I hope so." I said.
"I want you to trust me, Sunshine. I'm always here. I'm not going anywhere." Evan said.
"I love you, Evan." I said.
"I love you too, Sunshine." Evan said.
AN: For all the Violet Gardner haters, she's back! And I made Violet even more of an obsessive fangirl jerk. Hehe. Anyways, hope you enjoyed! Catch ya later!
