Red's POV
I smiled like an idiot seeing Cat's name light up on my phone screen. I loved her more than anything in the world, I don't know if I could keep us a secret any longer. But Cat was being really careful with who she told, so I decided to respect her wishes and keep my big mouth shut.
But I couldn't hold it in any longer. So I asked Cat if I could tell my mom. My mom and I were really close, and she hated Violet as much as I did. But obviously, she didn't say anything about it in public.
I opened my text messages, ready to see Cat's response. I wouldn't be mad if she said no, I totally get it.
Cat: It's fine. Just don't tell anyone in my family. Or Violet. Definitely not Violet. Love you.
I smiled, getting ready to come out to my mom.
"Hey Mom? Can you come here for a minute?" I said, sitting up on my bed. My mom ran into my room and said, "What's up?"
I pulled a picture of Cat up on my phone and said, "Do you know who that is?"
My mom looked over at my phone for a few minutes and said, "That's Catlynn. Your friend. Right?"
I nodded, getting ready to break the news. Moment of truth.
"She's my girlfriend. I'm a lesbian. I like girls, I'm gay." I said.
There was no going back now. My mom smiled at me and hugged the life out of me. "Red. You should've told me earlier! How long have you known?"
"I've known I was gay for around a year now." I said. "I've only been dating Cat for a week."
"Thanks for telling me, Red. I'm so proud of you. Cat's the perfect girl for you. Now, the bus should be here in a few minutes. Tell Cat I say hi." my mom said, winking at me. I giggled and grabbed my backpack.
________
"So?" Cat asked, sitting in the instrument closet with me, clutching her saxophone. "Did you tell her yet? What did she say? Tell. Me. Everything!" It was Cat's first day back at Hamilton Middle School, she left that charter school once Violet would not stop bothering her.
"Geez! Calm down, Cat! Okay." I lowered my voice to a whisper. "I told her. She accepts me, and she thinks you're perfect for me."
"Well, she's right about that." Cat said with a sassy smirk on her face.
Cesca banged open the door and said, "What are you two talking about in here?"
"Nothing!" we both said at the same time. Then I realized, Cesca knew about us. Cesca laughed and sat down on the floor with us.
"I just realized. Violet." Cesca said. "Does Violet know?"
"Oh no. Heck no. She's not finding out for a long time." I said. "At least, not if I have anything to say about it."
"Say about what?" a flute player said, coming in and unpacking her flute. "Violet Gardner told me that you're gay." she said, pointing towards Cat.
"Ha. No." Cat said. I was terrified in that moment, I thought she was going to out herself. And that's the last thing I wanted. For the whole school to know.
"I didn't mean you, Broadway freak. I meant Color Girl." the flute player said.
Me. Violet told someone that I was gay. I tried to hold back the tears, and Cat inched away from me.
"Come on, both of you." the flute player said, grabbing Cat's arm.
"Get away from her!" I said.
The flute player dragged both of us to the basement, and I could see fresh tears form in Cat's eyes. I gave her hand a comforting squeeze as the flute player locked the door.
The flute player didn't push us down the stairs, but Cat tripped and fell. Hard.
"SUNSHINE!" I yelled, then covered my mouth. I knew Cat didn't like people besides her family calling her Sunshine. I was waiting for her to cry or yell at me, but she didn't respond. Weird.
I ran over to her and gasped. She was unconscious. I ran over to Cat and brushed her hair with my fingers.
"I love you...and I'm not going anywhere...Cat...please tell me you'll be okay..." I said, crying in the darkness of the basement.
I grabbed Cat's phone and punched in the passcode. Cat needed her family more than me right now.
I was just her girlfriend.
