"Wake up, Sunshine! I have a fun surprise!" Elle said, shaking me awake. I sighed and rolled back onto my pillow.
"Does this 'fun surprise' have anything to do with hospitals?" I asked, rolling my eyes. Elle sighed and said, "No, because hospitals are not fun, at all. I have something to do tonight so you're staying over at Katie's!"
"How is that 'fun,' being away from home for an entire night without you?" I said, starting to panic. I've never been away from home for a night before.
"It'll help prepare you for the D.C. trip, Sunshine." Elle said. And she was right. I guess maybe it'll help me get used to being away from home.
"Yeah, I've known about the D.C. trip for months now. You're telling me I'm going to be away from you and Jess for an entire night the morning before it happens?" I said, freaking out and almost about to cry.
"Cat..." Elle said. I don't think she realized how this would affect me.
"No. Go away. I just want to be alone in my own room." I said, slamming the door and crying.
I put my ear against the door to eavesdrop, and I cracked a slight smile. The last time I did that was at the theater, way back when in April.
I heard Elle on the phone.
"Hey Katie...um, okay, so I just told her...yeah, she's not taking it well...what? Um...that's what I told her...I don't know what to do...okay, great. See you soon." I heard Elle say over the phone.
I then heard Elle knock on the door and I scrambled back onto my bed.
"Sunshine? I was just on the phone with Katie." Elle said. I nodded, trying to act like I didn't just hear Elle's end of the conversation.
"And?" I snapped. I wasn't in a good mood today, at all
"I get you've been going through something hard lately, but I just thought it would be fun." Elle said.
That's when I just exploded like a volcano.
"Okay, you know what? I love Katie, but every time I see her, or text her, or call her, it reminds me of losing Red. Why? Because SHE TOLD ME! She told me to check the news. I'm sorry, I just can't. Now get out of my room. Please." I said, tears lining my eyes.
"I didn't know-" Elle started, but I didn't let her continue.
"Stop. Just please, stop. I love you, but I need some time." I said. "Unless it's really important that I'm out of the house, I don't want to leave home."
"I don't feel comfortable leaving you home alone tonight, Sunshine. Please, do this for me?" Elle asked. I sighed and slammed the door of my room in Elle's face.
I ran to my bed and started sobbing into my pillows. I was sobbing all my feelings out. It was the first time I really cried since Red died.
I missed her so much.
I kept sobbing, wanting to pull out a picture of me, Red, Axel, and Cesca to see if it would make me feel better, but I felt so content crying into my pillow.
I heard the soft sound of a door opening, but I ignored it. I kept thinking about happy memories I've experienced, a calming method Ryan taught me, but it didn't work this time.
After a good five minutes of sobbing and trying to get my mind off of Red, I was brought back to reality by a comforting hand on my back.
"Go away, Elle." I snapped.
"Well, good thing I'm not Elle." I heard. I knew that voice.
"Katie?" I asked, sitting up. "I'm sorry...I look like such a mess-" Katie cut me off and wiped a few tears from my cheek.
"Shh...Sunshine, you're not a mess." Katie said, hugging me.
"I miss Red so much, Katie...I lost my best friend...I never had a 'best friend' before I got adopted...and now she's gone..." I ranted. Katie rubbed my back in slow circles and I relaxed a little.
"Do you want to have a Cat and Katie night in?" Katie asked. "I can stay here if you want."
I nodded happily, but my mind went right back to Red. I didn't even notice Katie get up and start organizing the mess on the top of my desk out of boredom.
"What are you doing?" I asked, laughing.
"You're not a neat child, Cat." Katie said, putting a bunch of pens in a drawer. I laughed and said, "I like being messy."
"Sunshine? Katie? I have to go!" Elle said, popping in the room. I ran up to Elle and ran into her arms.
"Mommy, do you have to go?" I asked. Elle picked me up and I threw my arms around her. Elle sadly nodded then put me down.
I ran to Katie and launched myself in her arms. Katie laughed and said, "What kind of food do you guys have?" I heard the front door slam then said, "Now that my mom's gone, I'll tell you. We have frozen pizza, which I've been looking forward to for the past week."
"Why can't you have it?" Katie asked.
"Mom wants me to save it for the weekend." I said. I suddenly missed Elle.
"Hey, I know it's hard, but do you want to have some fun?" Katie asked. "We have one night, gotta make the most of it."
"Always." I said.
