Elle's POV

I was fixing Catlynn's hair and getting her ready for her acting debut. She was all set in costume and we were getting ready to go.

"I'm nervous." Catlynn said, and I kissed her head. "You're gonna do great, Sunshine. We're all gonna be in the audience cheering you on." We were all dressed up to go to the show as well, and I had bought flowers in advance.

Catlynn and I went out to the car, and we drove to the theater, singing Candy Store on the way with Catlynn filling in for Heather Duke. There were a group of kids standing there, I guess they were Catlynn's castmates. Catlynn hugged me and Jessica and left, and we parked until the doors opened.

When the doors did open, a woman pulled me aside and said, "Are you Catlynn's mother?" I nodded, and she said, "Great. We're gathering the first 3 parents that come in to be audience volunteers. Sit in your normal seat and wait."

We sat down, and I saved seats for my castmates that hadn't yet arrived. When they did, the lights dimmed, and a girl walked out.

"Ms. Peretti. Please spell syzygy." a man called out.

"S-Y-Z-Y-G-Y. Syzygy?" said the girl, and the man said, "That is correct!"

Then, a boy in a Boy Scout uniform came out and sung, and the girl introduced him as the last year's winner Chip Tolentino. Then a girl in a blazer skipped out and the girl introduced her as the youngest competitor Logainne Schwartzandgrubbinere.

A kid in a helmet fell over and started singing, and they were introduced as Leaf Coneybear. Alice tapped me on the shoulder and said, "It's a girl playing a boy." I nodded as a guy in a suit and tie came out.

"Returing after last season's tragic setback, William Barfee!" the girl said.

Then a girl in a school uniform walked out and introduced herself as Marcy Park.

"Winner's destination, Washington D.C." Logainne sung with a lisp.

"Plasma TV in a fancy hotel, where they treat you well!" Chip and Marcy sung with her.

"Where's Cat?" Evan said from behind me.

I shrugged, then Jessica excitedly told me to look behind me. It was Cat, mouthing things to people. She climbed up the stairs and said to William, "Hi, I'm Olive Ostrovsky, do you know where I check in?"

William said, "Shut up!" and the song continued.

A few minutes later, the cast was holding hands and walking in a circle, singing.

And then Catlynn did the splits holding the final note. I cheered extra loud for her.

After a few minutes of general announcements from the girl introduced as Rona Lisa Peretti, I heard, "Now, it seems there are a few spellers who haven't checked in, so if I call your name, please come up the stairs and meet me over by the desk. Mr. James Sawyer, Ms. Juliana Drepper, and Ms. Elle McLemore!" Jessica and Ryan applauded and shoved me out of my chair. Cat and two other kids led each audience member to their seat. I was plopped in between Cat and the girl playing Logainne.

After a few minutes of announcements, and the introduction of a girl playing a man named Douglas Panch, a girl stormed out in a lot of flannel, and the spellers suddenly stood up. Cat pulled on my arm and I realized we were doing the Pledge of Allegiance.

A very fast Pledge of Allegiance.

When that was over, Panch said, "Now for the official spelling bee rules."
