Lucy's POV

"My name is Alastor Moody." Our new D.A.D.A professor introduced himself. I heard from Severus that he used to be an auror.

"At this point I think that this teaching position is cursed. Every single defence against the dark arts teacher doesn't seem to last a year." Terence was right. My first one turned out to be hiding Voldemort under his turban, the second lost his memory down in the chamber of secrets and Lupin resigned right after it became more public knowledge that he was a werewolf. I wonder what will happen this year with our new teacher. He certainly seems like a very different character compared to previous teachers, but not in a good way.

"Today we will be learning about the unforgivable curses. And I believe a practical approach is most suitable." I gulped once I heard Moody announce this.

"Weasley! Stand." He commanded and I saw Ron who was sitting at the front stand up hesitantly. I was sitting at the very back next to Terence and he also seemed nervous for what our teacher could have possibly meant by a practical approach.

"Tell me one of the unforgivable curses Weasley." Moody asked the boy.

"Umm...the Imperius Curse." He said quietly, I could barely hear him from back here.

Moody turned his back for a second and opened one of the jars on his desk that were all filled with different types of bugs. He pulled out one of the bugs and held it in front of Ron's face.

"Would you like to demonstrate that curse Mr. Weasley?" Moody asked and Ron shook his head violently.

"I will then, Imperio!" He called and fixated his wand on the bug. He made it jump from desk to desk with a manic grin on his face while doing so.

"Now who can tell me another, Longbottom!" He seemed to only be picking on front row students so Terence and I were probably not going to have to answer any of Moody's requests.

Neville took a second to get up and while stuttering heavily said the Cruciatus Curse was another.

"Yes, yes. Now will you be willing to demonstrate it or do I have to again?" Neville immediately sat back down.

"How disappointing, Crucio!" Moody made the bug shrivel up in pain. I could hear its agonising squeaks from back here.

"Stop it! This is barbaric." I heard Hermione cry out. Moody took his wand off the bug and walked towards her.

"Perhaps you could give us the last unforgivable curse then Miss Granger." He said more composed. Hermione shook her head and said no. I didn't see her face but she was definitely close to tears.

This was hurting me too honestly, but I tried my best to keep my emotions at bay. I knew in the future I would have to come face to face with these curses anyway when I will meet Voldemort with my father. The dark lord was known to have used those curses on a regular basis.

"The killing curse is the last one." I spoke up from the back row. I thought this might be a good opportunity to practice pushing my emotions by side and show no weakness. Severus told me that I would need to continue practicing this because when facing Voldemort it is important to be completely emotionless.

—- Flashback -—

"One of the reasons I made sure you were so proficient in legilimency and occlumency is because I don't want the dark lord to be able to penetrate your mind." Severus explained.

"When you eventually face him, you need to block your mind and be in complete control of your emotions. Learn to act cold and push sadness, regret and especially sympathy away. I know this is a lot to ask and I can't stress enough how sorry I am for bringing you into this mess, but this is so important for your survival."

"I know dad." I said.

"Come here." He pulled me into a big hug. "I believe in you, you can do this and once it is all over we can finally live happily."

The topics of our sessions had become so much more grim ever since I found out the truth about Severus, and Voldemort wasn't even back. I hope once he does return he will vanish as soon as possible. But until then I have to be strong and continue training hard.

—-Flashback end-—

"Correct miss—" He walked over in my direction and levitated the bug onto my desk. "I didn't quite catch your name." He said.

"Lucy. Lucy Snape." I told him. He cocked and eyebrow and stared at me for a few seconds.

"Avada Kedavra." He pointed his wand at the bug and in a flash it stopped moving. I saw Terence wince next to me but I made sure my eyes were fixated on that dead bug in front of me and showed no sign of it affecting me, even though internally I wanted to look away so bad.

"Very good." Moody said, once again staring at me for a few seconds and then telling everyone the lesson was over.
