Severus POV
We were seated in the teachers area together in the large round arena. In the middle of it was a field laid out with many large rocks and a golden egg right in the middle of it.
Crouch came out and explained that each champion will have a different dragon guard that egg and their task is to get it away from the dragon.
"Dragons..."Lucy whispered beside me. I looked down at her, just in that moment a roar was heard from somewhere near the arena. Lucy grabbed a hold of my hand and held onto it tight.
"Everything okay?" I asked worried and she nodded. "I just got a fright is all."
Diggory was up first. He transfigured a rock into a dog and managed to get away with a few burns. The Delacour girl put her Dragon to sleep and Krum blinded it. Lucy was holding onto my hand the whole time and the second Krum sent the spell at the dragon she grabbed my hand tighter. I figured that it just frightened her, but soon I was to find out that there was a whole other reason behind it.
There was a short break in between the time the first three champions did their task. Potter was next, his Dragon was brought out and chained up like the others. However when his name was called, we saw Crouch walking out and doing the Amplifying Charm. He clearly had an announcement to make.
"Harry Potter has requested his second to step in for this round!" He announced. This made the crowd start booing for a bit until they were silenced by Crouch calling out a name.
"He has requested for Lucy Snape to step in for him!" He called and pointed over in our direction.
Lucy looked at the man wide eyed. No, this couldn't be. She can't go out there.
Crouch walked over to us but I stepped in front of my daughter "I will not allow it." I said angrily.
"She will not be going, Potter needs to pick a different second." I told Crouch sternly, but he just shook his head.
"I am sorry but just as Potter can not refuse to participate in the competition the same way Lucy can not step out of being asked to be a second. The moment Potter said her name she was part of this and can not say no."
I put my arm in front of her protectively, but she just took a deep breath in and out and said "Okay."
Deep down I was aware of the rules and that she couldn't back out, but I just didn't want her to get hurt.
Lucy's POV
To be honest I had completely forgotten about the whole seconds thing, but it made sense why Harry chose me. He was there that day Shadow had returned and saved us, he probably thinks I could take on the dragon.
But I was actually pretty scared. Shadow seemed like a tame dragon from the start, the one in this arena seemed like the complete opposite of him. But then again, I had deep sympathy for these creatures. The way they are treated here is horrible, all chained up and after the battle forced into (compared to their size) tiny cages. When Viktor blinded that Dragon it was as though I could feel his pain and confusion to becoming blind for a split second.
Before I went down to the arena with Crouch, I gave Severus a tight hug.
"You are strong, you can do this you hear me." He said and held my face with his hands. "Be careful, maybe try to distract it or something. Just please please be careful."
I nodded "I already have a plan I think."
If that plan was going to work though, I was not fully sure of.
