Morning sunlight filtered through the window and Alastor opened his eyes and groaned softly only to feel a weight on him. He looked down and smiled warmly over Josephine using him for warmth. She had such a peaceful smile on his face. He slowly reached up and caressed her cheek. Josephine woke up and smiled as she cuddled him.
"Morning."
"Morning."
"God I'm starving."
He smiled brightly and sat up stretching his back with a loud pop. "This is a beignets kind of morning. We have to celebrate!"
"Celebrate?"
"What do you think darling? Celebrate Us!"
She blushed and smiled brightly as he picked her up and carried her the bath. He paused though, to sigh over his now buttonless red dress-shirt. "I may have gotten to carried away, that was my favorite dress-shirt."
"I can fix that Alastor. We just need to buy the right thread and few sewing needles."
They bathed and dressed before kissing down in the opened entryway door. They almost undid all the progress made in order to leave the house. Josephine parted the kiss and smiled softly.
"Alastor, my stomach is growling. Sorry my dear cannibal but I'm pulling the strings right now. We're going to eat some beignets."
He laughed happily and nodded. "Alright, onward my darling!"
The cafe owner of the famous beignet shop was a little concerned when Alastor ordered the beignets but the moment she saw his arm lovingly wrapped around the waist of a young woman she grinned and nodded.
He ate two and a half while Josephine devoured the rest. He smiled as they held hands while walking down the streets with a new basket of red thread and new box of sewing needles, his ruined red dress-shirt, and the buttons in a tied up pouch.
They were happy until...
"So the Creole Whore and the Radio loving Fool are now a couple?"
Alastor stopped in his tracks and instinctively pulled Josephine closer when he smelled the irritating scent of Chanel Number 5 perfume.
"Carmilla."
Carmilla scoffed and then noticed the fading bite marks on Josephine's neck appearing beneath the thin scarf she wore.
Carmilla smirked and then started cackling like a wicked witch.
"Oh Alastor you devil! You fiend! You're seriously sleeping with this whore? Hahahahahaha have you no dignity?!"
Josephine's eyes dimmed as she noticed the snickering grins of the higher class all around them. Alastor's anger rose over Josephine's sadness and he countered with a scoff. "Well at least I'm happy. What about you? Has Clyde been in one of his moods again? I noticed you're holding your left arm up more than usual. Such a violent fellow ain't he?"
"I what—How Dare You!"
"Causing confrontations just to get a sick thrill over our pain is just sad Carmilla. I had hoped better of you, but with Clyde pulling the reins it would seem I was grossly mistaken. Staying in the presence of such prideful snobs, for as long as I have, has left an unsavory taste in my mouth. It's honestly beneath me. Come along Josephine, we're leaving."
Carmilla's anger simmered but without Clyde beside her she wouldn't act further than taunting them.
"Fine go on then! Go crawling back to that Flapper wrench's brothel! Just remember your place Alastor! Unless you want to make an enemy of Clyde!"
Alastor stopped and turned to look over his shoulder and scoffed. "Heh, I know my place and I'm quite happy mind you. As for Clyde, that snarling Coonhound doesn't frighten me. None of you do! Did you ever think it's you who should be the ones frightened of me?" He grinned wickedly and successfully unnerved many of the people who witnessed this little social spat. "Good day and good riddance."
He left with Josephine and when he felt like no one was following them he sighed heavily and pulled her into an alleyway. He hugged her close to his chest.
He whispered into her ear. "You are beautiful don't let her words or their stares get to you. You're beautiful Josephine."
"It's not that...Alastor, What The Hell Were You Thinking?"
Alastor blinked in surprise. "What?"
"Saying that they should be afraid of you have you lost your dang mind?!"
She was shaking and backed away from him so he could see her intense frown.
"What if people start to question? What if they going looking? What if they find out? What then? You won't be safe! Mimzy and Husk...they'll be dragged down with us just for knowing us! Don't you get that? If those people ever get the brain cells to see beyond your smiles and charm...if they start to put all the puzzle pieces together and realize that you...and I..." She looked like a wide eyed doe about to flee a pack of snarling rabid dogs. "Oh God Alastor, this is so wrong! Everything's wrong I—I—I can't do this! Not again! Oh God I can't lose anyone else! Not again?" She panicked grabbed at her arms and started hyperventilating. "Not again! Not again! Oh God please not again!"
Alastor gasped and pulled her close and rubbed soothing circles against her back. "Shhhh shhhh it's okay. Everything is going to be okay. I'm sorry. I know I frightened you. But you don't knows these people like I do. Their idiots, all of them are to stuck in their ways."
She was panting heavily and he kissed her temple repeatedly before lifting her chin so she looked up into his eyes. "I'm here Josephine. I'm not going anywhere. We're safe. We're safe right now."
She shed a tear. "I love you."
"I know. I do to, and I'll protect you...always."
He hugged her and sighed as he listened to her heartbeat slowly down. "Come on the Radio Station is down today while a repairman I know personally fixes the studios sound room window. Let's head to Mimzy's."
"I'm sorry I just..."
"It's okay I understand."
The moment they entered Mimzy's place they were immediately teased by Husk and suffocated in death hugs by Mimzy once the bite marks were visible.
"Okay okay I know you're happy for us but I'd like to sew the buttons on his dress-shirt now."
The moment Josephine said that Husk was dying from laughter again!
"Oh my God Al! You devil!"
Alastor was hiding his red face against the countertop. "Just kill me now..."
"Ha nope! You should've waited a few days before bringing her here if you didn't wanna be teased relentlessly!"
Josephine smiled softly as she sewed the buttons while humming to the songs the band played.
"Had a little confrontation with Carmilla again."
"Oh no what did that prissy bimbo say this time?"
"She tried to get a good laugh over my relationship with Josephine and I put her down a few pegs. Clyde has been a little volatile as of late hasn't he?"
"The Bastards paranoid about that Bayou Killer coming after him since a few of his hunting buddies up and died on him."
Alastor smirked as he side eyed Josephine. "Well I'm not going to dispute your words but for some strange reason the man's torture brings me such joy!"
"You've got a sick sense of humor Al."
"At least I have humor!"
"Oh Shut The 🤬 Up Al!"
