Sometimes, fate is a funny thing.

Benjamin Warren thought fate laughed at them from far away, putting people close enough that they'd maybe see each other, but not enough for them to meet eyes and fall in love.

It was a laughable trick, a classic case of authors making their characters close, but not close enough to meet just yet, and the readers are screaming at the book, asking them to just turn their heads to see the one they're meant to be with.

And that's exactly what he's feeling right now.

Staring at his childhood neighbor and best friend, Miranda Bailey, he knew fate had been laughing at them from the start.

He smiled. "God, Miranda, you're... you're just as beautiful as I remembered."

She blushed and looked down, holding his letter in her hands. "Flattery will get you nowhere, Benjamin."

"I guess your letter did get me somewhere. We're here, aren't we?" He waved the very familiar pink envelope in front of them.

Miranda smiled, and God, his legs were putty. Ben was a man's man, and he didn't get soft or warm just for anybody. But this goddamn woman made him feel like a 5-year-old boy staring in the chocolate brown eyes of a pretty girl.

Why were they here again? What happened, that they got here?

Ben's head rewinded through the past 3 months.

Being an Anesthesiologist, he was busy and he hadn't really noticed that his 30th birthday was coming around.

Not until his mom called him.

"Benjamin Winston Warren."

He winced at the tough voice coming from the other side of his phone. "Yes, mom?"

She sighed. "Really, Ben, I thought you'd know what I'm calling for. Seriously. I've sent you countless of links about trying to find your soulmate."

"What?"

"Your soulmate, Ben!" Her mother groaned. "Your 30th birthday is next weekend."

His eyes widened. "Shit."

"Language, son. God, I know I raised a smart and responsible man. Why the hell is my son so slow?" Ben could imagine her rolling her eyes and slapping a hand to her forehead, and he chuckled.

"I'm sorry, mom. You know I've been busy." Soulmate. His soulmate letter would be coming the next weekend. What was his soulmate like?

Would she be tall? Or short? Beautiful? Would she have a sharp nose? Or a button one? That didn't matter, but he was curious. Would his other half be bold, or shy? Did she like kids, or was she the kind who spat on children's faces? He surely wanted some kids. He just haven't had the chance to meet the one. And maybe he was subconsciously waiting for the day his soulmate's letter to come to the mail.

He came back to the present, where Sofia Warren was talking in his ear. "That doesn't excuse your forgetfulness, child."

"I'm sorry, mom, okay? I'd look into those links you sent."
