She didn't notice it immediately.
For someone who's only seen black and white all of her life, you'd think she'd notice the color as soon as she sees it.
But no, Miranda barely even recognized it.
She was in the hospital, as usual. But the atmosphere was different.
Not in a i'm-gonna-meet-my-soulmate-today way, but in a my-hospital-is-being-overrun-by-orange-wearing-idiots type of way.
Seattle Grace was merging with Mercy West and she hated it with everything she's got.
She felt like her home was broken into, and took all the good things about it. And she was territorial, so these goons aren't going to mess it all up.
Everyone was on guard, and she could tell the rest of her colleagues also weren't pleased with this new development at all.
Miranda stood with Callie as they watched the Mercy West-ers come in with their orange scrubs.
Not that she knew what orange looked like.
Callie whispered to her. "They look like idiots. Orange? It looks like puke."
Miranda chuckled. "Thanks, but isn't color supposed to be beautiful?"
"Not this. Nope." They laughed to each other, and while Miranda knew she never cared about color - or soulmates - she kind of wished she could see more than black and white.
Essentially, everyone was born with the ability to see only two colors. Black and white. One can see the other vibrant colors when they meet their supposed soulmate.
There were several stories about it, about meeting your soulmate. Some were shocked, as their world suddenly came to life, and some said it was overwhelming that they began to cry. For a handful of people, it was one color after the other.
Miranda never cared for it. At a very young age, she knew she hated the idea of soulmates. Well, not really. She loved it. But she hated the idea of someone being chosen for her instead of her falling in love just for the sake of it. It all sounded pretty controlling, and that's what she hated about it. What's wrong with wanting to choose your own soulmate?
A lot, apparently.
Society was closed off with that kind of mindset, because who wouldn't want soulmates? And even though she had found someone who was willing to overlook the fact that they haven't seen a color outside of the basic two, she had ended up divorced after 10 years of marriage.
"What the fuck are you talking about?" Miranda screamed, her head about to explode, because her husband isn't talking to her.
Tucker had been distant lately, and she thought it was because she hadn't been home early in a week. But he just walked in and announced he wanted a divorce, and started packing his clothes like a mad man.
He kept quiet even as she followed him around. She kept screaming, and tears were flowing down her cheeks.
"I can see, alright?!" He finally shouted, turning to her. "I can see the colors. I found my soulmate."
Those words, taken out of context, should be exhilarating, should have her hopping with joy.
But this wasn't that kind of movie.
"What." Her words were empty, and she felt pain cover her chest. It was empty, and she should question it, because she should feel her world crashing down, but it all just felt dull.
