Miranda walked slowly to the elevator, hoping that nobody noticed her sluggish movements.
Luckily enough, the elevator car was empty and she entered it as quickly as her body would allow.
She pressed on the button indicating what floor she needed to get to. Her body jostled against the wall as it moved.
The light pierced through her eyes, the pounding in her head increased and her eyelids fluttered shut.
Miranda leaned against the metal wall, and she closed her fist around the railing. The cold helped in reducing the ache in her skull, but she tried her best not to press her forehead into it; hospitals prioritized cleanliness, but elevators were a whole other thing.
Her eyes still closed, she could feel the contacts digging into her lids. She sighed, her hand twitching at the urge to rub her eyes until the irritation faded.
The vision issues alone were enough to make her irritable at work, since reading and comprehension are pretty vital to her job. And she can work through pain. (Reasonable, normal person levels of pain.)
But when her migraines get this bad, the couple times of year that it felt like her brain was getting sliced to pieces, she felt like her absence in the hospital was the least she could do for herself.
(The normal Miranda Bailey, the one without the sharp pain starting at the base of her neck and ending at every point in her body, would disagree with her; work was important, work was her life.)
(But if her migraine hurt any more than this, she would collapse in a heap of skin and bones. So, going home was really the best option here.)
The elevator doors opened, and Miranda blinked her eyes open. She walked to the direction of her office.
Every move she made increased the pain, and her body screamed at her to just sit down somewhere, anywhere. But she forced herself to pick up the pace, her goal to lock herself into her office until her husband picked her up.
Stumbling inside her office, she was glad to see the blinds closed, and she sighed in slight relief when she laid down on her couch.
Miranda moaned softly, her eyes closing on their own accord. Her hands moved from her side, and she grasped her phone, picking it up.
She hadn't been used to relying on anyone, but being married almost 15 years to Ben made her realize that being a damsel in distress wasn't a bad thing sometimes.
She quickly texted her husband, begging him to come pick her up. She was sure the text was gibberish; she had squinted at the bright screen and decided texting blindly was the way to go. Ben would understand what that meant.
Her eyes were still closed, and moments after she sent the text, she fell asleep.
"Baby?" The voice was a normal level of sound, but she groaned and put her hands over her ears.
The migraine had set a vengeance on her, and it was worse. She stirred on the couch, feeling a warm hand moving up and down her arm.
"Ben?" She croaked out, her throat dry. "Is that you?" She spoke slowly.
